After some more crawling through the Korean underground rock scene, another few recommendations are discovered. The earlier articles cover a variety of artists in a number of different rock genres, ranging from the most unknown bands to Korean rock superstars.
This time around won't be different, as I've compiled yet another list including five different rock bands for you to check out and get to know. Despite the Korean rock scene being essentially completely underground, resulting in very few bands ending up in the spotlight, it houses an incredible amount of talented bands, waiting for fans of rock music to be discovered.
We start this month's rock editorial with punk rock group Rocket Diary, who're planning to make their return to the rock scene. Following, we turn to Vanilla Unity, female fronted Cherry Filter, post-hardcore band GoldRush, and indie band The Finnn.
Rocket Diary - Punk Rock, Punk Pop
One of the first groups I managed to bump into when starting my search for Korean rock a few years back was this young group. Rocket Diary, filled with energetic youngsters, released its first single "20 Instant Life" sometime in 2005, starting in the ever popular Korean Punk Rock scene.
Although they haven't released anything apart from a compilation song since their first full length album, "District 13," in 2007, it's been rumored the group is currently preparing for another release to be out, either later this year or early next year.
Vanilla Unity - Punk Pop, Post-Hardcore
This five member group released their first album, "Love," in 2006, and revealed a follow-up to that record in 2008 with "Commonplace."
After disappearing and disbanding at the end of the same year, fans expected them to return sooner or later because they never gave a decent explanation for going their separate ways. Two years later, in 2010, the members reformed the group and released a new single called "Hey! Monster."
Just recently, at the end of September 2011, the group revealed another full length album called "We Are Rising" after signing with Sony Music.
Cherry Filter - Alternative Rock, Punk Pop, Female Vocals
The band was originally formed in 1997. Their unique sound consists of emotional ballads, punk rock, rave, and trance. They were mostly underground until their second album "Made in Korea?" became an instant hit. Since then, they have become one of the most popular Korean bands around.
Cherry Filter is fronted by Youjeen, who had a successful solo career of her own before fully concentrating herself on the band. They have five albums to date: "Head-Up," "Made in Korea?," "The Third Eye," "Peace N’ Rock N’ Roll," and "Rocksteric."
GoldRush - Post-Hardcore, Indie Rock
This underground rock band first started releasing their music around 2007, and have come a long way since.
The quintet has been paving their way through the underground rock scene by having numerous performances in Korea's rock district Hongdae. They also released their first full length self-titled album after four years of existence in March 2010.
While it's not really certain what their next plans are, GoldRush is sure to surprise people with their raw sound and vocals.
The Finnn - Indie Rock
The Finnn originally started out as a one-man-band who recorded its demo tape and distributed it through the Jisan Valley Rock Festival. In September 2010, the group gained another member after signing with Ruby Records.
In the beginning of October, the band revealed their second full length album "The Finnn 2," as well as its corresponding music video for "Cello." The album consists of 10 songs and two bonus tracks. The bonus tracks are a re-recording of a previously released song and a song that was originally featured on a compilation album.
