Dongwan's Men's Health Interview

Fresh Passion Boils Inside!
Kim Dongwan, How He Makes It Without Tire

Kim Dongwan's energy is burning. After his release from his public service duties near the end of last year, he's finished 40 performances of the musical Hedwig, and he received much praise for his performance as Lee Yuksa in the Liberation Day Special zenith. Including his years as Shinhwa, he's been running forth for more than 13 years, but he still shows no signs of tiring. He's sucking in these new areas as if he's receiving fresh blood transplants. How can he keep up with his untiring race? We became curious of where this energy, which breathes into him new life, comes from.

Kim Dongwan's Way of Making a Lasting Body

1. Exercise your waist and back regularly
In my Shinhwa days, I only concentrated on building more muscle. But as I exercised more and more, I started to learn the importance of back and waist exercises. Like trees can only stand with strong roots, your body stands straight only if your spine's erector muscles are strong. If you work hard on hardening your spine, you can correct your posture and prevent slipped disks.

2. Eat foods that haven't been processed
Processed foods can't help but have destroyed nutrients. It's important to eat foods that can be eaten by just boiling them, like potatoes, corn, and grain. It's great to satisfy your hunger after exercising with nuts such as almonds and walnuts, too. Start planning a diet with foods that can be eaten without adding artificial seasoning.

3. Think of the fitness center as your playground
I visit the fitness center even if I'm not going to exercise. I read and drink coffee and just play around there. It's such a natural playground. I play around and then I just exercise without pressure and relieve my stress. If I start to force myself to go to the center, then exercising becomes forced also, and I start to lose interest. If you want to enjoy exercising, think of the center as a playground and visit it often.

Take a look at Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in Interview with a vampire and Taylor Lautner in the Twilight series. Vampires have such a fatal charm to them you start to think that it doesn't matter that they're cruel and brutal. But you can't explain their attractiveness just with their looks. The reason why films which tell vampire stories keep coming through the ages is because the stories tell mostly of a conflict inside the vampire itself. Immortal and strong, and yet swaying between reality and the human world. They start breeding mutants, come to a devastating end, and sometimes find their own answers in these lives
Kim Dongwan's proof of his unwavering life strength, as a transgender onstage and as a poet and liberation fighter, reminds us of vampires. To come to where he is now after starting off as an idol singer, he would have had to think a lot about his being and his territories. But he didn't stop there. Louis, in Interview with the vampire, lived an immortal life and traveled the world, and in the end came to a miserable conclusion that 'the world is hell', but Kim Dongwan found what he really was inside and started to take the hellish world head-on. And in that fight he is finding new life energy. His eyes, stronger than they were 13 years ago, prove it.

Your first piece after your release was the musical Hedwig. Is there a special reason you chose this piece?
I thought that I wanted to venture to a new area of acting. I thought that it would bring a change in my image made by only taking on hard working and bright roles before my enlistment.

Hedwig's character changes with the personality of the actor. It must have been a burden to make your own Hedwig.
Many musical actors and singers have acted as Hedwig. The most important thing is that they didn't try to make an artificial Hedwig, but just drew a Hedwig out of their own personal charms. That's why I didn't evaluate the Hedwigs acted out by other actors. I wanted to make my own Hedwig, found in my own tendencies. I think in the end I found a bright and cute and old Hedwig. Haha.

Wasn't it awkward to be acting as a transgender?
It was a bit awkward but I got used to it soon after I started. I tried hard to make my movements, expressions, and even the blinking of my eyes like a woman. I tried so hard to do that that sometimes even now, after all the performances are over, I surprise myself with my feminine movements.

You performed a total of 40 times. It must have been difficult physically.
In short, I got really sick. You can't help but be exhausted after singing more than 10 songs which are each at least five minutes long for every performance, with dance. When I sang with Shinhwa, I didn't feel my body hurt, but after spilling my all into the hedwig performances my muscles felt strained like mad. It was difficult, but I learned there is a charm to musicals that can't compare with what I've given up. I could see it through to the end because though I was exhausted physically, I enjoyed it inside.

What did you do for Lee Yuksa before actually acting in the role?
I first read the critical biography of Lee Yuksa. It wasn't a difficult one; it was one which even middle, high school students could read. I thought that if it's too difficult, I wouldn't be able to find my basis. I thought it would be most fitting to start with Lee Yuksa's most basic framework. I evaluated his emotions as a poet, his concerns as a liberation fighter, and the environment which he grew up in.

I heard you even had partial hair loss due to stress.
It's not easy trying to put the 40 year life story of a man into 2 episodes. There was a lot of pressure, and the schedules were really tight. But as much as I worried about it, I felt a satisfaction. After wrapping up the shoot, it felt like I had kissed the girl I had a 10 year crush on for the first time. I think I could quench my thirst for acting a bit.

And in the midst of Hedwig you shot the Liberation Day Special Zenith
I was offered a few more pieces before Zenith, but I turned them down because I wanted to concentrate on hedwig. But I couldn't turn down zenith. Lee Yuksa, the poet and liberation fighter, was a role which I had never experienced before. I thought I would be able to find a satisfaction in acting I had never felt before.

Your acting was received very well. We believe you would have wanted to do more as an actor.
Not really. Of course I would work hard if I met a good piece, but for now I think I've poured in too much of my energy, so it's more important to start recharging. If you become too greedy you'll experience an overload. The public notices I'm not at my best if I act in a role I can't concentrate on. I want to take it slow.

You seem to have loosened up a bit more.
I've thought a lot about many things while I was serving as a public officer. I think I was living too anxiously. I thought I would be able to do anything, and in that pride I worked too hard. I learned I'm not Superman. I thought if I go on like this, I wouldn't be able to last long. I learned that to really last, I should work hard without using up all of my energy.

Do you think you used too much energy during your Shinhwa days?
Of course back then it was really hard. We had such a tight schedule we couldn't even get proper sleep. But back then I was younger. I think it's a passion that can only be found in youth. But the problem was I continued on that way even after Shinhwa. I felt anxious when I wasn't doing something, so I did anything that came my way. It wasn't like I was taking on a real challenge, but I thought it was just my duty. Now, I think that even if I do only one thing, I want to do it perfectly.

You have a hard working and persevering image out of the other Shinhwa members. I think that's why you have so many deep fans.
I'm honored if you see it that way. I think a lot when I work, and I can't stand giving something up before I see its end. For example, after I heard a few days ago I would be having a menth's health shoot today, I worked really hard. I exercised, I went on a diet, and even at the last gathering for hedwig I didn't drink any alcohol. I want to do what's given me as perfectly as I can.

Must we wait more to see you as a musician?
No way. I'm going to come back as Shinhwa in March next year. The members are all working very hard. We promised that if we're going to do this, we should do it properly. I'm sure we can show our passion hasn't died out.

It's really an undying passion.
I want to be sure of my presence in the things that will make me happy, regardless of their results. I do those even if I'm not asked to. I'll always be this way.

I had a thought about how awesome it would be if SM NY had the classic SM Line up of HOT, SES, Shinhwa, Fly to the Sky and BoA.

I damn near died of glee at the idea.

Sigh.

Every time Perfect Man comes up on my shuffle I am like "HELL YEAH!"
