Q: Eight years has passed since you formed Tohoshinki. What has changed and what has not changed?
YH: Changmin was too strict with himself and hid his feelings. It seemed sometimes to be very stressful. But recently he has been opened his heart to our staff. I think he has grown to a cool and attractive adult.
CM: Yunho is pure-hearted. It hasn't changed. He never gives up chasing his dream that he has from before the debut, and is making every effort to make his dream come true. It’s amazing an adult like Yunho continues to have a pure heart like a little boy.
Q: Did you recommend something for each other recently?
YH: He recommended One Piece for me and I got into it. My favorite character is Zoro. He is passionate, and once he decides to do something, he put it through. Also he has a sarcastic side. He is like Changmin (laugh). I would be Luffy. Zoro controls Luffy. The relationship is similar to ours.
CM: I agree. He is like Luffy! He loves to play pranks and always surprises me with totally unexpected ideas. But he says great things when it counts.
Q: Do you remember your first impression of the other?
CM: Of course. I met him in a training room of our office when I was in the 3rd grade of junior high school. My first impression of Yunho was that he was manly and powerful. He said to me "Quit right away if you do it halfheartedly. You should do it in earnest." (laugh)
YH: I was distressed by the fact that trainees continue to quit quickly. So I was strict with newcomers. My first impression of Changmin was he was a preppy (laugh). He was quiet, but practicing really hard.
Q: You will release an album after a long while. Which is your favorite song?
CM: I choose Duet because this is a new genre we tried for the first time. We asked the director again and again if we were doing okay. But when I listened to the recorded song, I realized that I was worried for nothing. It’s a music only the we of today we can create.
YH: I choose Weep. I like the lyrics and the music is easy to memorize. I think we can sing it together with the audience at concerts. Also this song is kind of inspiring.

Delight becomes double and sadness becomes half when we are together.
Before they stand on a stage, they do a certain thing. They form a circle with the dancers and shout to lift up their spirits. When they become alone at the wing of a stage, they dub their fists lightly without a word. They say it lifts their spirits high.
CM: I've been singing on the stage for eight years, but I still feel nervous. When we give each other a quick dab with our fists, I can hear Yunho's silent message "Let's give it our all!". It’s a small thing, but very important for us.
YH: I, too, can hear Changmin's message "We can do it!".
CM: If he said "We can do it!" aloud, I would feel a little embarrassed (laugh). We've been living together for as long as eight years, so we don't need words any more.
They have been living under one roof and sharing joys and sorrows since they debuted in Korean in 2004. During the interview, they nodded to the words the other spoke and Changmin looked proud of Yunho when he agreed with Yunho’s words saying "Exactly!". Their attitudes told us how their relationship is. The bond they built up over the eight years is amazingly strong. The activities suspension of about one and half years until this January's comeback seems to have contributed to enhancing their bond too.
YH: I really missed our group activities during the suspension. Both Changmin and I had a drama separately and we are satisfied with them, but I felt lonely when I was doing the solo activities. The experience makes me feel even more strongly "I'm very happy to be in a group." I feel grounded with Changmin around and comfortable because he knows me better than anyone else. When we are together, delight becomes double and sadness becomes double...
CM: It should be "becomes half" (laugh).
YH: Yes, sadness becomes half!
CM: I've never thought of myself as a solo entertainer "Changmin", even when I was shooting the drama. I participated in the drama as Changmin from Tohoshinki. Of course, I've never thought about becoming a solo artist.
YH: Me too. So if we do separate jobs, we are always ○○ from Tohoshinki. That will never change. Tohoshinki is our home. We will come back to our home no matter what happens.

Relationship built on rules will eventually stop working.
The word "Home" reminds me. What are they doing at home where they are living together?
YH: We often play a soccer game called Winning Eleven.
CM: But we rarely play it together.
YH: Because we both really like the game. If we played against each other, we may have a quarrel (laugh). So we play the game separately although we are living together.
CM: Oh, they will release the 2012 version in October. I’m really looking forward to it. The more a game is difficult, the more I get motivated.
When it comes to a game, they talk with twinkling eyes like little boys. So I ask them lightheartedly "What would you do if you became the other for one day?". The answers they gave after a moment of silence were unexpectedly serious and straightforward, and their words well described their relationship.
YH: I want to stay the way I am now, because we are in the best balance the way we are. The balance was achieved naturally over the eight years. For example, when I don't feel good, Changmin makes the atmosphere light, and when Changmin is tired, I clear the atmosphere. It doesn't mean we feel the need to do something, we just help each other unconsciously. I like this relationship very much.
CM: I feel the same way as Yunho. I can't imagine if we switched our bodies. Some people say they need rules in order to form a relationship or work together, but we don't need any rules because we understand each other completely through the atmosphere and facial expressions.
YH: Yes. We don't need to say our feelings aloud because we understand what each other is thinking through our facial expressions.
CM: There would be no end if we started making rules. Beside, a relationship built on rules will eventually stop working. It applies to all material objects doesn’t it?
Hard materials easily break under pressure. Flexible materials do not easily break. Likewise, we keep our relationship flexible and adequately loose without rules, and just let it be. This is our style built up over eight years.
YH: I think such relationship of us have good effect on our stage performance.
They will release their new album in September and then start a nationwide tour. On the wings of the stages, they will dub their firsts, and their bond will be getting more flexible and stronger.

Date: 2011-09-30 06:39 pm (UTC)i will never tire of this tasty mush you keep on feeding us, boys. loved the switching question.
(still so happy about the one piece analogy, and how perfect it sounds. i bet changmin threatens yunho with sharp, sword-like objects to stop his insanity at times, as would zoro.)

Date: 2011-09-30 07:36 pm (UTC)Actually, their relationship reminds me of a self-contained ecosystem, where imbalances are freely and automatically corrected by natural forces to maintain equilibrium. I like how they're taking things easy and making the most out of their hard-earned mutual understanding.
