Yonhap News has the skinny on how to become a “Samsung man”.
Many wonder what they should do to obtain a job with Samsung Group, the largest domestic company, and its largest subsidiary, Samsung Electronics.
With Samsung having recently announced that it would hold an open recruitment process for 12,700 positions, Samsung Electronics offered the recruitment guide “Samsung Recruiting Magazine S²” (삼성 리쿠르팅 매거진 에스퀘어) to the hiring hopefuls at its recruitment presentation held in Seoul on the 8th and 9th.
The presentation will be held a second time on the 15th and 16th.On the 13th Yonhap News obtained a copy of the guide, which is jam-packed with know-how and advice from veteran employees.
Samsung will take applications from the 15th through 19th and administer the SSAT on the 25th, then hold interviews.
According to the guide, the background examination (서류전형) takes into account all data and it is easy to make a small mistake, so you must be very careful.
Your grades and qualifications must be absolutely consistent with your graduation documents, and your graduate date must be consistent with your eligibility.
Your self-introduction is an important component for the interview, and should be written with the utmost honesty, and candidates who already have some relevant experience should delete the basic application and begin a new one.
When the deadline arrives there may be so many applicants that the system is not working well.
The time and location of the SSAT are available from the Samsung recruiting homepage (www.dearsamsung.co.kr) and applicants must be aware that there is no individual notification, so they must confirm everything themselves.
The test lasts from the early morning through the evening, so be sure not to skip breakfast.
With so many questions to be answered in a short time, keep an eye on the clock and don’t force yourself to do problems you don’t know the answer to.
Since it’s not a test you can cram for, ready a lot of books and newspapers and, before the exam, rest up so you have enough energy.
As for the interview, it would be a mistake to go in thinking it will be like any other interview.
You will be closely watched from the moment you get on the bus to the company.
Dress nicely, and wear a necktie.
The interview will not be over as quickly as a regular interview, but will be a place to examine your character and attitude, so after taking the SSAT you must act confidently.
The guide advises that “interviews at Samsung are well-known for being warm. They put your mind at ease, and there are plenty of snacks, so it’s alright if you miss breakfast.”
In the guide, Gong Jun-jin, head of the memory department in Samsung Electronics’ engineering division, advises ignoring extensive reading.
He says that “you can learn from essays, comic books, novels, and textbooks, even children’s books… read a lot of books for yourself, not to be seen by others, and you will be of help to the company.”
He emphasizes that studying foreign langauges well enough to be able to read foreign scholarly works and dissertations and receive qualifications and certifications should not be a source of stress but rather thought of as having the goal of becoming an expert and applying those skills to useful effect.
Gang Tae-jin, an employee in the software division, said that you must be interested in all aspects of a project, not merely those that you are most involved with.
Currently, the company does not have enough personnel to meet its needs in the era of convergence.
Kim Gyeong-hyeon, director of marketing in the image display division, said that “marketing is sociology, so it’s important to have experience and a feel for things.”
Accordingly, you must have the standout creative ability to be able to go directly to where consumers are, make your marketing materials interesting to them, and keep up with the rapid changes in technology, and you must have the English ability needed by overseas firms.
Lee Sang-gyu, director of the reliability testing group in the radio division, said that you must show your unique points in the interview and everywhere else.

You are guaranteed at least a nod if you studied in the US.
Pretty much accepted if you went to an Ivy university.
A BA from Samsung told me this.

they mentioned how not a lot of people last a few years.
So it must be a really stifling environment to work in.

Date: 2011-09-18 05:08 am (UTC)This also sounds like a case of someone in corperate early on thinking, "We'll just make the requirements insane and see who's willing to still apply. Risk takers 'natch." Proceeds to snowball into hell.
What's really weird is in quite a few ways this relates (to me) trying to get into the educational field. Though our test isn't so long, thank the lord. We're also not followed on our bus rides, however parents will sometimes make you think they are...
