Yonhap News has the skinny on how to become a “Samsung man”.

Many wonder what they should do to obtain a job with Samsung Group, the largest domestic company, and its largest subsidiary, Samsung Electronics.

With Samsung having recently announced that it would hold an open recruitment process for 12,700 positions, Samsung Electronics offered the recruitment guide “Samsung Recruiting Magazine S²” (
삼성 리쿠르팅 매거진 에스퀘어) to the hiring hopefuls at its recruitment presentation held in Seoul on the 8th and 9th.

The presentation will be held a second time on the 15th and 16th.On the 13th Yonhap News obtained a copy of the guide, which is jam-packed with know-how and advice from veteran employees.

Because the background examination, Samsung Aptitude Test (SSAT), and interview are similar at all Samsung subidiaries and other companies, those who are preparing for the job market will want to pay attention.

Samsung will take applications from the 15th through 19th and administer the SSAT on the 25th, then hold interviews.

According to the guide, the background examination (
서류전형) takes into account all data and it is easy to make a small mistake, so you must be very careful.

Your grades and qualifications must be absolutely consistent with your graduation documents, and your graduate date must be consistent with your eligibility.

Your self-introduction is an important component for the interview, and should be written with the utmost honesty, and candidates who already have some relevant experience should delete the basic application and begin a new one.

When the deadline arrives there may be so many applicants that the system is not working well.

The time and location of the SSAT are available from the Samsung recruiting homepage (www.dearsamsung.co.kr) and applicants must be aware that there is no individual notification, so they must confirm everything themselves.

The test lasts from the early morning through the evening, so be sure not to skip breakfast.

With so many questions to be answered in a short time, keep an eye on the clock and don’t force yourself to do problems you don’t know the answer to.

Since it’s not a test you can cram for, ready a lot of books and newspapers and, before the exam, rest up so you have enough energy.

As for the interview, it would be a mistake to go in thinking it will be like any other interview.

You will be closely watched from the moment you get on the bus to the company.

Dress nicely, and wear a necktie.

The interview will not be over as quickly as a regular interview, but will be a place to examine your character and attitude, so after taking the SSAT you must act confidently.

The guide advises that “interviews at Samsung are well-known for being warm. They put your mind at ease, and there are plenty of snacks, so it’s alright if you miss breakfast.”

In the guide,  Gong Jun-jin, head of the memory department in Samsung Electronics’ engineering division, advises ignoring extensive reading.

He says that “you can learn from essays, comic books, novels, and textbooks, even children’s books… read a lot of books for yourself, not to be seen by others, and you will be of help to the company.”

He emphasizes that studying foreign langauges well enough to be able to read foreign scholarly works and dissertations and receive qualifications and certifications should not be a source of stress but rather thought of as having the goal of becoming an expert and applying those skills to useful effect.

Gang Tae-jin, an employee in the software division, said that you must be interested in all aspects of a project, not merely those that you are most involved with.

Currently, the company does not have enough personnel to meet its needs in the era of convergence.

Kim Gyeong-hyeon, director of marketing in the image display division, said that “marketing is sociology, so it’s important to have experience and a feel for things.”

Accordingly, you must have the standout creative ability to be able to go directly to where consumers are, make your marketing materials interesting to them, and keep up with the rapid changes in technology, and you must have the English ability needed by overseas firms.

Lee Sang-gyu, director of the reliability testing group in the radio division, said that you must show your unique points in the interview and everywhere else.

Basically, you need to speak/write/read English at a business level.
If you don't, get out.
You are guaranteed at least a nod if you studied in the US.
Pretty much accepted if you went to an Ivy university.

A BA from Samsung told me this.

awkward. MY dad was all of those and he worked for Samsung for years. Twice a year they would send the family a cake and we'd get tickets to go see the Samsung LIONS play baseball too.

I liked it. It was just a regular chocolate cake, but it had coffee flavored cream icing. I think one was for his wedding anniversary.. one I'm not sure. Hire date, maybe?

What on earth is this all day test they need to take for a job interview? I've seen where interviewers have candidates take a short cognitive test as part of the process (maybe 30-60 minutes long) but the idea of an all day test for any position in a company seems excessive.

My interviews (diff country) are generally:
a) technical/past experience questions
b) behavioral questions

Nothing about literature and writing exams.

At LG? Well he's a recent graduate and in a starting position so can't expect much from ANY company, tbh.

Yeah, then again he's like late 40's so I'm sure he's been there since forever! So it makes sense about your friend I guess; I'm sure he'll make more in the future :)

Look if I want this job I'm gonna follow the instructions to the letter (given that I'll be "watched closely" the whole time) and I don't want to be snaffling kitkats at 11am if I'm meant to have had breakfast : (

LOL. D'you think they monitor how many snacks each applicant has at snack time? Maybe it'd be best to keep a pocket full of warm gummy bears so that you could sneakily eat them throughout the whole day? It'd be a way to make friends as well :D You hear a fellow applicant's tummy rumble 'Hi I'm Sally, want a gummy bear?'

my friend was studying for the test, and i saw his korean book to study and it's huge.

but he asked me one of the questions and it was like, "the wonder girls "tell me" is a hook song, which one of these is also a hook song!" and there was like 4 disney songs and i was like what does this have to do with business at all tbh.

Well Samsung is a bit awkward nowadays with all the lawsuits, that I don't always agree with btw. They could use some innovation though, something different. They have good products but nothing that really stands out )):

These kinds of companies expect waay too much from people and no doubt Korea's taking it to another level as always. And some big shots in the company lead can't even fulfill the requirements themselfs.

this sounds worse than the SATs, I've done all day interviews before but they usually include 2 meals, and I had to do a presentation

this sounds 10x more stressful

I remember Cho Shin Sung mentioning about this on Japanese TV (When they discussed the plastic surgery thing).
I was like "omg the pay is amazing." at first, but,
they mentioned how not a lot of people last a few years.
So it must be a really stifling environment to work in.

Interesting how so much of what you hear about S. Korea's business is really stifling and unimaginative to say the least, yet they want people to be generalist-experts until you get the job. Then you're an expert in your field, unless you happen to be snapped up in the "we need more of this gender!" hiring process I remember reading about. Ugh, reminds me of an article a few years ago (maybe?) about a tactic where interviewees would get random phone calls and pretty much harrassed to see how they handled it.

This also sounds like a case of someone in corperate early on thinking, "We'll just make the requirements insane and see who's willing to still apply. Risk takers 'natch." Proceeds to snowball into hell.

What's really weird is in quite a few ways this relates (to me) trying to get into the educational field. Though our test isn't so long, thank the lord. We're also not followed on our bus rides, however parents will sometimes make you think they are...
