David Choi Opens Up with His Thoughts on K-Pop



Songwriter and producer David Choi recently shared his thoughts on the ever-growing K-Pop industry with viewers on YouTube.

David Choi, the famous YouTube artist, begins by mentioning that his fans frequently write about K-Pop in his video comments. In addressing the popular topic, he reveals his thoughts on the growth of the Hallyu wave, appeal and images of celebrities, and the direction of Korean entertainment.

While Choi believes that early Korean artists copied American music, he states that K-Pop today has improved greatly to "well-crafted," "catchy," and good sounding music. Yet he does not see eye-to-eye with the appeal of "girly guys," and the seemingly endless numbers of girl and boy groups debuting as some lack originality and depth in a cookie-cutter fashion.

Acknowledging that viewers may dislike what he has to say, Choi encourages fans in saying, "If you like a certain style of music, listen to it. No one is stopping you. The more you listen to it, the more you support… It's people like you that make K-Pop bigger and bigger… Listen to it, support, buy their albums, go to their shows. That's how they grow as artists and bands."

Kpop stans need to know that not everybody in the World will appreciate Kpop, different strokes for different folks. There will be some people with negative views about Kpop, but this guy put forward his view in a reasonable view, he didn't bash or hate them.

I always get pissed off when people start making comments about 'girly guys' etc, as though there's some specific way you have to look/act/dress to live up to your XY chromosomes...offensive to girls and guys both imo.

Eh, cookie cutter music exists everywhere. About all one can do is sift through it, and hope for the sake of the group/individual that the cookies will grow as artists and get some pretty and unique icing sugar at some point.

EXACTLY THIS. I was about to comment on the fact that people start picking on guy idols in both Korea and Japan and calling them 'girly'. There is NOTHING that defines what should be 'girly' and what's 'manly' - every one is different, and if they choose to dress or style themselves in a certain way, then so be it, no need for the hate. It doesn't undermine their chosen sexuality or gender in any way at all. Anyone that says otherwise needs to get educated :|

I have a feeling he's kind of buthurt because of his lack of success and the ease with which kpop MVs can rack up the millions of views on youtube. Get over it tbh. People like catchy music. The sky is blue.

funny how he praises 2ne1 yet his criticism of k-pop applies to them as well.

anyway, it sounds like he did this to get some attention or something. was it really necessary to voice his views on k-pop? not really.

I think he's talking about when the boybands have an unnecessary amounts of makeup caked onto them. That's not a pretty face, a lot of these guys look ridiculous with the heavy makeup that get's done for their concepts.

i understand his dislike for kpop, it is pretty generic and manufactured, not everyone has to like it.
what i don't understand is the way he talks about "girly guys". if he talked about plastic surgery and the cookie cutter music, i'd kind of see the connection...but the "girly guys" bit is purely insultuous.
