Translation of Tohoshinki’s TV Guide Interview (September 16, 2011)
MATURE
Everyone knows how firm our friendship is.
The path we have taken was not wrong.

About 8 months have passed since they restarted the Japanese activity in January 2011.
Tohoshinki will release a long-awaited new album after about 2-year hiatus.
As they say “We want to show matured Tohoshinki”, the album “TONE” represents newly-evolved Tohoshinki,
who has been rising toward the heights

Album which has further strengthened their bond
The English word “TONE” has various meanings such as sound tone and color tone. If we could control music in such detail, we could move up as an artist…..
With this thought in mind, they’ve filled the album with their passion and enthusiasm.

 
CM: We made this album as a gift for fans. This is the first album to be released since we became a duo, so we put our soul into every single song.

YH: Chorus was one of the Tohoshinki’s weapons. That’s why it was a challenge to cover everything with only two members. Sometimes Changmin sang the lead vocal and I did the background chorus and vice versa. In this way, we created the new Tohoshinki color.

Has your bond got stronger?
YH: I think our bond got stronger in the course of preparing the album. Now we can read each other’s mind through our eyes. Changmin and I have 108 degrees opposite styles, so….

CM: 180 degree! (pointed out instantly)

YH: Oh~! 180 degrees (embarrassed). We have different styles, and that’s why we’ve successfully created the new color.

Did you discover a new side of each other?
CM: To be honest, Yunho has become part of my life without even noticing during the past 8 years spent together. Now it’s difficult to find a new side of him…..

YH: (laughed loudly, clapping his hands)

CM: But I can say Yunho is giving out the charm of a matured man in “Flowers with the color of happiness”.

YH: I noticed Changmin’s ability of rapping. When Speaking of Changmin, people think of his vocal ability. But his rapping is mature and good too. It can be Changmin’s new weapon.

What do you want to do in the concert to be held next year?
CM: I want to show matured Tohoshinki through evolved performances and songs, and say a big thankyou to fans for waiting so long for us.

YH: A stage really means a lot to me. Besides good performances, I want to convey a message “Tohoshinki has been evolving”. It’s a stage that makes me feel happy. Just a while ago, I experienced this feeling “Ah, how happy I am”. In my private life, I’m happiest when lounging at home (laugh).

CM: I feel happy when I’m on a stage too. In my private life, I like laying back and drinking beer after concerts.

What do you expect from each other in the future?
CM: Basically, I don’t expect someone to do something. I don’t mean I don’t expect anything from Yunho.

YH: You surprised me!

CM: It’s not good to have excessive expectations of others. I’m happy if he stays just the way he is now.

YH: It’s the same for me. Everyone knows how firm our friendship is. We want to continue to do our best to rise to new heights just as we are doing now.

We wanted to put us to the limit.
We wanted to put us beyond the limit.

We want to be an artist who keeps improving no matter how many years pass by.


We want to sing together with the fans at the solo concerts!
What do you think of Introduction ~ magenta ~ ?
CM: I thought it sounds like a
nursery rhyme. We tried this genre for the first time, and I was worried
the song might turn into a real nursery rhyme when things go wrong
(laugh). I thought this song could accentuate the charm of other songs,
so sang it with a pure and simple mind.
YH: Introduction is the
representative track of the whole album. That’s why I think this song
represents Changmin and me making frantic efforts to make this album.
How about B.U.T?
CM: Most of the past Tohoshinki’s
dance numbers came with vigorous dance and have made us out of breath.
(Yunho burst into laughing!) This song isn’t an exception, but the
lyrics have a different taste and represent a boy who directly
approaches a girl.
YH: I tried an action scene in a
music video for the first time. At first I didn’t understand why I need
to high-kick (laugh), but I did because I wanted to show my mature side.
Ah, it was also my first time to wear gray contact lenses.
Unfortunately, the lenses are harder to spot than we expected (laugh).
I’m satisfied with the music video because my action scene gets along
with the dance scene that all of us put our best efforts into.
How about Duet?
CM: The lyrics convey a message “I want to protect the person I love at any cost”. I think it’s a manly way of expressing love.
YH: The tile “Duet” relates to us in
a way. This song is a mixture of conventional style and a new charm of
Tohoshinki. The lyrics are…….I wonder if Changmin has such an
experience, but I have (laugh). I did the recording, thinking back of my
past.
The ballad that they put their heart and soul into is a new masterpiece!
What kind of feelings did you put into “Flowers with the color of happiness”?
CM: When we heard the demo tape, we
thought it would become a ballad representing more evolved Tohoshinki
and so we poured our honest feelings into it. Especially Yunho worked on
it with enthusiasm. After we completed the recording, he said “I want
to record this song again from the beginning” and we did the recording
again and then again. This is the most repeated song in the album and we
put the largest effort into it.
YH: The director said okay. But I
asked myself “Where is the limit of Tohoshinki? How far can we go?” and
thought “We should put far more efforts! We can go further!”
This song is a long ballad of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Tohoshinki has
conveyed many magnificent ballads such as “Bolero”, but this time we
have to express a song of 6 minutes and 40 seconds in this genre only
with two voices. That’s why we wanted to push us to the limit.
How about Easy Mind?
CM: It’s a happy song. The lyrics
say “Forget stress and enjoy yourself!”. I enjoyed singing this song,
and I’m sure we can enjoy it together with the audience.
How about Weep?
YH: We put our gratitude into the
song. It’s just my personal opinion, but it’s a suitable song for
closing our solo concert. I hope people memorize the song and sing along
with us at the concert.
Are Easy Mind and Wee directed towards fans?
YH: Yes, we sang these songs with
our sincere gratitude to our fans for waiting so long for us. At the end
of “Easy Mind”, you will hear strange and bad whistle (laugh). It’s me.
I fell in Changmin’s trap (laugh). He told the director “Yunho is a
good whistler”, but I’m bad at it……Fortunately, my whistle was
considered to be artistic and now it is a funny story. About “Weep”, we
put our gratitude into the last part “La La La ~”.
Which is your favorite song?
YH: My favorite song is “Flowers
with the color of happiness” we recorded again and again. It’s a long
song, and ballads are the genre where Tohoshinki has sung a lot of
songs. Both of us worked on it really hard, so please check it out.
CM: My favorite song is “Why?”. This
is a meaningful song which marked the restart of Tohoshinki. I hope
people feel matured Tohoshinki through this album.
The album is released in autumn! What's your favorite Autumn Food?
YH: Chestnuts. When I was a junior
high school student, I had a part time job handling chestnuts (smile).
Places where chestnuts grow have beautiful landscapes.
CM: I want to eat nice, warm Oden (Japanese Pot-au-feu). (Yunho immediately butted in “Let’s go to eat oden.”♪)

i cant even express how much i adore how all 5 of them still consider themselves in the midst of learning, growing and evolving, and are all so eager to learn and explore new areas, even though other people consider them the "best" or the "standard". i hope none of them will ever change this way of thinking, ever.

and god i hate it when they make yunho wear circle lenses, but i didnt notice him wearing grey contacts though....

I was positively surpised interview was about the album when I got into a cut, thanks for making this post OP. :)

So my bet on 幸せ色の花 being an easy listen happy song turned out to be completely wrong. xD With that title I'd never guess it's a ballad. Seems like Easy Mind is a kind of song I've been thinking about. Weep is surprising as well...

As for the rest of interview, I can be only happy they've found their style, they understand each other well etc. etc.

This was a short but engaging and informative read. HoMin's answers in the first half of the interview seemed even more sincere and meaningful than they usually are. I was pretty moved by how appreciative of the past, comfortable with the present, and optimistic about the future they sounded. Good for them.

I also enjoyed their comments on their new songs and the recording process; I have my ears set on 'Introduction ~magenta~' and 'Shiawase Iro no Hana' for now. It's 'T' for TVXQ, 'T' for teamwork, and now 'T' for TONE. I'm once again realising how enviable a mutual understanding HoMin have. Let's go, Touhou!
