South Korea earned the dubious distinction of worst-performing host nation at world athletics championships when the 2011 edition ended on Sunday.

South Korean athletes have never made a real impact in the sport and were not tipped to a first medal either at the home event.

But one sixth place and one seventh place - from race walkers Kim Hyun Sub and Park Chil Sung - put them below Sweden (Gothenburg 1995) and Canada (Edmonton 2001) who had also not medalled but recorded fifth place finishes.

South Korea's agony culminated when Asian champion Kim Deok Hyeon, their only athlete to qualify for a final in Daegu, couldn't compete in the long jump decider because he injured himself in triple jump qualifying.

The team also failed to get a medal in the unofficial marathon team standings on Sunday, finishing only sixth after placing second there 2007 in Osaka.

Their fate was sealed when both sprint relays failed to make the final on Sunday, but the crowd was more than satisfied over the men's national record for fifth place in the heats.

Daegu major and organising committee co-president Kim Bum Il expressed his hope that the championships will give the sport a boost in the country.

"I believe that this world championships has provided the perfect platform to further develop Korean athletics," said Kim.

:v ... why was it in daegu?
All I know about Daegu is that they have apples.... I don't really know them for "being hospitable for foreigners and athletes"

Haha, you know a lot. All I know about Daegu is what 2PM Kim Junsu keeps saying about his hometown. :D

Because of the apples. There's a myth that if you eat a lot of apples, you will become beautiful.

Like Pierre de Coubertin said: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”

Well these are not Olympic Games but the spirit should always be the same in every sport competition. Whatever the sport is.

Don't focus on the fact that you're not winning medals but more on the fact that you are being picked to host those competitions which is an honor.

Haha tous les profs de gym disaient ça! :D

I'm not either but I never quite understood the drive to win-win-win. I like winning, but not at the cost of enjoyment.

Plus I hope what Kim Bum II will be right ^^. Usually to host such an event does wonder on the sport itself within the country.

I like how some have more hip sass than others.

Dangle a few idols in front of some rabid SK fan girls and I bet a world record would be made.
