KPOP has earned great popularity overseas, and with that popularity overseas music sales has increased as well. But it has recently been revealed that music distributing companies such as Mnet and Soribada have been illegally distributing music.

Korean music distributors such as Soribada and CJ Mnet have been making a profit by distributing Korean music overseas. The only problem is that the writers or artists that have written these songs do not know about this. They have signed contracts that only allows the songs to be sold within Korean, but the distributors have been selling these songs overseas without the permission of the copyright owners.

A 2NE1 music distribution employee stated, “Since we never mentioned signing an international distribution contract it’s illegal…”

Typically American music distributors such as iTunes will sell a song for approximately 1,500 Won, and give approximately 900 Won to the copyright holders. In Soribada’s case they have clumped together many songs and sold the songs at 60 Won per song.

An overseas user said, “Typically foreign sites cost about $1 per song, but (Korean sites) have lower prices and they come in packages…”

The involved companies have stated it was an employee mistake. Though they have resigned with the various management agencies they are still in the process of moving ahead. There are arguments that major distributors are interfering with the development of Korean music.

Assemblyman Lee Chul Woo said, “Selling someone’s work overseas is no different from theft. To illegally distribute music for free is only hindering Hallyu.”

International music distributors are currently preparing to sue illegal distributors for damages.

In all seriousness, this must be why the English Soribada site decided to change up their business model.

I feel bad since I have given them my business.

I knew something was wrong with Soribada for sure. Those prices were just too cheap, even iTunes isn't like that w/o a sale of some sort. Glad I just download them illegal or use the good old fashion buying CDs.

jfc. :/ i can't believe they sell tracks for that cheap, anyway. they should just start licensing through iTunes, they'll make money that way and it's 9000 times more legit than this crap. i know SM already sells some stuff through iTunes cos i downloaded SNSD's oh! through iTunes last year. it would help with their digital sales, which are down for a lot of artists/companies, i know...

anyway, i hope the companies win the suit against mnet and soribada because this is bullshit.

It took them forever to get Run Devil Run up, though. Like Hoot was on iTunes before Run Devil Run, lol.

Feeling horrible cause I gave them money now :( Guess I'll just stick to buying the physical cds then...since some of what I want isn't really on iTunes.

but didnt Mnet and Soribada close down the overseas options some months ago? cus i know ihottests were mad that they wouldnt contribute to the digital sales when 2PM came out with Hands Up...

I had credit with Mnet but it was never for downloads, only for streaming and watching video, but either way that kinda sucks

from what i understand with soribada, they stopped giving out the foreigner card option a while back but they still had the english site (kpop.soribada.com) still up for foreigners to use.

IKR? You can't preach hallyu, and not provide your music in legal, convenient ways.

Wow that's messsed up
I only buy through ITunes or physical copies from Gmarket so at least I didn't contribute to them stealing profits.

Kinda OT but I always wonder whether Korean variety shows get rights to use so many foreign songs. Like Running Man for example uses so many different songs in just one episode. Random thought of the day

I ALWAYS wonder about this, sincerely anytime I hear a song in English, the thought kinda just passes through my mind.

This explains a lot of the moves the Big 3 have been making lately. It seems like these companies were just doing whatever they wanted.

soribada used to be a major p2p music sharing program like napster. I guess nowadays it's more like ... still just like modern day Napster, but more successful.

But wow they were selling the songs for close to nothing, wern't they.

I'm happy these sites never got my money as I bought physical albums through YesAsia or used iTunes. I just wish all Korean artists put their music available into iTunes (I really wonder why so few does it when they get much more per song from there than from Korean music portals).

I buy my stuff off iTunes too but I'm really overly cautious cause it has all those assholes that have put up Kpop music to sell on iTunes but they're not from the companies. After this happened..I guess I'll just stick with buying physical CDs and if worse comes to it rip it from a friend.

Also sucks that they stopped selling to foreigners on Soribada cause I used to try and get all the original songs from Immortal Song after it aired :( IDK where to get just the songs now.
