but to those actually in J-pop have ANY of the latest releases from girl/guy bands been like actually J-pop style? Or is it just K-pop in crappy Japanese?
some of them have been really going out of their way to remake themselves into jpop groups - dgna is the first that comes to mind, and snsd's japanese album could be classified as either jpop or kpop imo. but most of the recent hallyu is moving away from like it was before, which was remaking groups to fit the japanese scene (dbsk and boa!) to just.... translating songs and hoping they do well on the charts (p much every kpop group crossing over in 2011!)
That's what I've been thinking. I feel like DGNA have been the ones to make the biggest effort but I have no idea if it's actually paying off.
I was originally really irked with SNSD's first Japanese stuff. It was shitty Japanese, and just really really Korean. And then Mr. Taxi came out and their new album like you said and I was sort of dealing with it better.
But I'm like seriously irritated that these Korean bands go to Japan and don't make the effort anymore? I mean I can't blame them per se but it's like its kpop in jpop land not kpop even remotely trying to be jpop. IDK.
from what i've heard it isn't that much? i don't really see much news of them on the j-pop scene, and i think most of what fame they have is coming from their original korean fanbase/really dedicated hallyu fans in japan. :(
yeah, it's really weird. like up until a few years ago it was like, if you wanted to make it in japan you had to completely remake your image so that you it into the japanese scene - you learned japanese and you released j-pop songs and you kept your k-pop sound in korea, but that takes years and years of effort and practice so most groups are either half-assing learning or just basically releasing english singles in japan, and it's... not that appealing. (and tbh japanese netizens are already sick of it - the only groups that are really honestly popular are the ones that are presenting a j-pop image, like kara and recent soshi. but even then you have to have something backing you up, see dgna with whatever company they're under not making it while soshi with sme p much have).
lol sorry for the essay this is pretty much my senior thesis otl
I feel sort of sorry for those like BoA and THSK who did open the doors to other kpop stars but I feel like it's not fair that that everyone else is using their ~korean image~ to pass through.
Especially, bringing in something that was posted today with 2pm and Perfume. Like that was intensely a Korean thing to do in Japan keeping them Korean but you would have never seen someone like THSK do something like that. I just remember Jaejoong taking about the weirdest thing is the openness in Japan that he was so surprised to see girls riding bikes in short skirts and dresses. 8D
Also going back to kpop in japan, I feel like it sort of defiles the prestige of foreigners in jpop. And it ruins the effort THSK (mostly bc I was there during 99% of their time there) made into changing basically who they were. I don't understand the appeal of wanting the same band in 2 different places with basically the same music. I'm a ballad girl all the way so THSK was great for me because I loved their upbeat songs but their massive amount of ballads made me so happy but when they would get back to Korea it was like they would change completely.
I think I love the humbleness and like determination in Japan in comparison to them STILL being Gods in Korea. From nothing to going back to something.
I remember awhile ago when that guy was talking shit about kpop on fuji tv. And I've always been afraid to ask but since you mentioned it, is this whole kpop as kpop in japan just a phase that people are going through? or this legit it? like are we going to get shitty as 4minute in with people who try really hard like Kara? like I can't figure out where this is going and whether people are just accepting it as it is because its just a phase or if people are accepting it because they don't care about working hard anymore.
Honestly I'm so fascinated to have this conversation with someone. I've been asking and curious for so long. Thank you so much!!!
idk, the hallyu wave in japan is weird. people seem really fed up with these kpop acts who don't make any effort, but they do legit respect those that do - t-ara is probably gonna get hated on, but soshi and kara are legitimately popular. (tho i'm kind of interested to see how much staying power soshi has :o i could see them either going super far or just sort of stalling and losing the public's interest fast :c) it's mostly when kpop artist present themselves as korean that they get shit, from what i've seen?? there's def a resentment of those who half-ass their debut and get sales because of their korean fans, but those that make the effort are ultimately accepted, i guess, like kara and boa and dbsk.
idkkkk it's so weird, and there's still political tension between the two countries that color their interactions, and then if you look it it from a different angle, japanese artists NEVER sing in korean when they release stuff in korea but they're still wildly successful, there's just so much to it and it's all weird @___@
Korean MV: Sexy demon cat lady picks up guy at the club, makes out with him in the bathroom, takes him home, fucks him, and kills him. Japanese PV: T-ara bakes cupcakes.
