10ASIA Interview + Photos

GROUP
They fill the studio in an instant moment. There are seven of them, but it’s not the fact that the studio is too small. It’s the energy they emit that makes the studio brim with their presence. After they greet everyone in a booming tone, they stand before mirrors, fixing their clothes and conversing with one another as they prepare for their filming. They don’t have that rookie shyness. In place of it is a free-spirited energy that seems to be reaching its height until leader Zico calls them all in front of the camera to get rolling. This is how Block B moves.

- Block B has already transcended the limits of an idol

It’s a market that’s so saturated, the number seven, the genre of hip hop, and the identity of idols themselves no longer have any merit. It was amidst such a market that these boys emerged in April with their rough voices making a daring claim: “Rap, dance, performance, I’ll show you what exceeds your expectations so believe in me. We don’t need rehearsals.”

Rapper Zico, who’s had his skills acknowledged in the underground hip hop scene since his young teens, was asked about his thoughts on a career change that confused many. He replied, “I like being a rap artist, but I also wanted to try producing and being a producer. I wanted to make more people in the mainstream hum along to songs that I made. I’m still young so I still have a lot of time to pursue music that I want. In the meantime, however, I want to do everything that I possibly can.”

Park Kyung as well promoted underground and is also the best friend of Zico since elementary school. With a bright smile, he replied, “I began music to hit on girls. The effect of it was amazing. Although since we’ve debuted now, I’ve put a restraint on that.”

Like the words of smile representative U-Kwon, “We don’t have anything like managing our image”, the boys showed a stronger character than any idols we’ve seen before through their MTV reality program, “Match Up”. Appearing before the camera in his underwear and putting their lives on the line to trick each other at a mud flat is just some of what makes Block B who they are.

Although he’s got a baby face, main vocalist Taeil is actually the team’s oldest. He began pursuing music at an earlier age than most and went through six years of training. Even next to dongsengs who are all louder and bigger than him, it’s this foundation that helps him hold his ground.

Maknae P.O., who’s the owner of a low, deep voice, has a strong sense of determination, which can be felt through his story of losing 10 kg to join the group.

B-Bomb, who’s only interested in dancing and the stage, has a bizarre side to him that can be seen in the way he reveals that he wants to ‘raise a little sister’ in their dorm.

Anyone can tell that pretty boy Jaehyo is the group’s visual upon first sight. Surprisingly enough, he’s actually quite loose compared to his looks, a fact that’s shown once he opens his mouth. He’ll freak out in fear over a moth that’s come in their dorm, but still reveal his strong affections for the group every chance he gets.

- Magma at its hottest point

But no matter how hot their passion is, the minute they stop on their path, it only takes a moment for their hard work to turn into ash. Their latest album, , was produced by Zico and Park Kyung and adequately showcases Block B’s unique color. Unfortunately, on top of being rookies, they’re also from a smaller scale label, making music programs their biggest obstacle.

“If we’re ever given 10 minutes, we’re going to split it into three minutes and share those with other rookies. It’s okay if we only have three minutes to perform, because there are definitely others that are in our situation.”

It’s words like these that show their desperation for the stage. When asked what they would like to give to others, without hesitation, they replied, “Us.”

Like magma that’s slowly beginning to heat up, we feel that their explosion will come at a date earlier than most.

ZICO
My stage is Zico, and my real name is Woo Jiho. I’m Block B’s big-shot leader. I was born on September 14th, 1992 and studied music and the arts until my third year of high school in Japan. One year in Japan, and one year in Korea, I went through my third year of high school twice.

My older brother of two years is Co-Ed’s Wisdom Taewoon. I once trained with my hyung, but I didn’t want to debut in the same group as him. My resemblance to him? (Jaehyo: Taewoon is nice and you’re not!) Hyung has an easy-going personality whereas I’m a bit more tight with myself. I don’t leave myself alone so people get nervous when I’m being still.

I’ve been friends with Kyungie since elementary school. When we were little, I had no idea that we would be pursuing music together. He was a nerd that only ever studied while I was one of the cool kids, haha! (Kyung: He was just a kid that did art, I was just a kid that studied.)

It was actually because of me that Kyungie was able to debut, too. I was one of the starting members of this company so Kyungie would always try to sweet talk me through messenger. (Kyung: Well, there’s the saying that a guy will hit it big if he’s meant to. Even if not through you, I would’ve debuted no mater what, haha.)

At the time of writing ‘Halo’, I thought Block B would be this elite group, a minority in the masses. I wrote the lyrics in this desperate mindset of becoming the best, of being different, of ending it all once we debut… but once we debuted, we were just idols in yellow outfits.

Like it was revealed in the first episode of MTV Match Up, our dorm is really dirty. (Kyung: Jiho and I are always yelling at them to clean up.) Well, I guess it’s more right to say that Jaehyo hyung and Kyung are the ones that mess it up. (Jaehyo: I don’t really mess up the dorm.) Yes, you really do mess up the dorm, hyung.

I think our fans treat us like normal people, not celebrities. (U-Kwon: Like neighborhood friends? Kyung: As church oppas. Jaehyo: As people that you can see anywhere? Haha)

On tracks like ‘Tell Them’ where I participated in the production of it, I direct the members during recordings. I make all of the members try out all of the parts and distribute the parts to the member that fits best with it. Because I give each of them an equal opportunity, there aren’t any problems with the members. (U-Kwon: Because if we get cut from a part, it’s because we weren’t good enough for it.)

It’s harder to produce music for Block B than it is for myself underground. For underground music, I can just transfer my thoughts and stories into my music, whereas mainstream music is for the mainstream audience. It has to be something that everyone can connect to. There are a lot of factors that you can’t miss when writing lyrics for mainstream music, so I think it requires a lot more talent and skill than initially thought.

I’m really thankful for my fans. Even though we’re not often in the media or on TV, I’m just so thankful that they recognize our efforts in trying to break that barrier to make it through. They even come to my underground performances and take pictures and whatnot. It’s because of our fans’ efforts that help more and more people to recognize us.

KYUNG
My name is Park Kyung. I’m the rapper and visual of Block B. I was born on July 8th, 1992, and I have a nuna three years older than me and a brother four years younger than me. I’m the second-born, the one that has the best personality out of all three. I have a good relationship with my nuna but I think she’s a bit upset lately because I haven’t been able to pay attention to her much since our debut. My younger brother is a flute major; his skills have been recognized nationwide, and he’s a bit more handsome than I am.

I think I myself am a charm. I think of myself as competitive and I’m full of confidence wherever I go. (U-Kwon: Yes, it’s good.. to have confidence.. Jaehyo: I think every team needs a character like Kyung.)

I studied in the States during my first year of high school, and in New Zealand during my second and third year. It wasn’t a lot of fun because of communication barriers. The reason why I asked Jiho to let me audition for the company was because I wanted to go back to Korea.

In that aspect, Jiho is my life’s savior, but also my enemy. I’m not sure about now, but I know a year from now, I’ll be able to tell whether he’s my savior or enemy. (Zico: Ahahaha, not even a year, maybe two months?) Okay fine, in three months. I, of course, hope that he’s my savior, and also hope that we continue our friendship.

There was once someone that mistook me for SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong senior. (Everyone: PUHAHAHAHAHA!) I was in Dongdaemun when an employee came up to me and said, “I’m your fan!” I said back, “You must be a Block B fan,” and she replied, “I love SS501. I thought you were Kim Hyun Joong.” I actually look like… John Park, though. (Zico: I look like Kang Seung Yoon-ssi).

P.O. doesn’t feel like a maknae to me when (Zico: When we go to the sauna?) he buys something for us. Some time ago, we produced our outfits on our own and it cost about $800 USD, which he paid for in a single payment. Not with his credit card because of the commission but with cash. (Jaehyo: They said that he couldn’t get a receipt for it either. P.O: I don’t have any regrets.)

I think Taeil hyung would be the nicest if he got a little sister. Lately, he’s been extra nice to the company trainees. Why he is… I have no idea. (Everyone: PUAHAHAH!) I once asked them to choose a favorite member and they obviously chose m… Not me, but Taeil. Because he’s so nice to them! (Taeil: Nah, I just give them tips on singing questions~)

On days we don’t have schedules, we train in singing, dancing, or rapping - whatever we need extra help in. It’s a bit upsetting because if we were on TV more, we’d be exposed to more fans and have more people listen to our music, but the cards just aren’t on the table yet. Still, we need to make sure that we practice that much harder.

Block B’s biggest charm is the fact that we’re not fake. Like you can tell from Match Up, we weren’t sitting prepared before the cameras came to our dorms. We really were sleeping, without even BB cream on. 100% real! (Jaehyo: Me wearing just panties was an all-kill. Zico: But the soju bottles on the floor weren’t ours, but our managers’!)
10ASIA (NATE) VITALSIGN@BLOCKBINTL (bontheblock)

TAEIL
My stage name is Taeil, and my real name is Lee Taeil. I’m Block B’s main vocalist and I was born on September 24th, 1990. I have a nuna two years older than me and a younger brother nine years younger than me.

I graduated from an all male high school, and I wasn’t a student that did anything eye-catching. I was into music then so I’d leave after fourth period to go home and train. When you’re training to become a celebrity, it’s hard to make friends, so I made the extra effort to become friends with the entire student body.

I’m the type that completely immerses myself into something I fall in love with. I’ve always loved raising tropical fishes since I was little so I joined a club for it. My aunt gave me two fishes to raise myself, which later turned into 7~800. A trick to raising fishes well is to try not to touch them as much as possible. You have to just leave them alone. (Zico: Fishes are kind of like us then, just leave them alone to grow on their own.)

A while ago, an internet community board uploaded a picture of our fish meeting. Those were taken on the day I went to Daejun for a tropical fish auction. I was so excited at having caught five and noticed someone behind me taking pictures. Unfortunately, I went home during break and sold all of the fishes. They die if you don’t take care of them during the summer so I sent them all away.

Aside from fishes, I was also into motorcycles. There’s a negative stereotype with high school students and motorcycles, but I lived in Jamshil and my school was in Kangnam so my mom allowed me to buy a motorcycle and ride it to school. After school, the members of our club would meet at Namsan. (Kyung: For tuning? Zico: With your front wheels up? U-Kwon: Did you guys have metal pipes with you too?) Nah, it wasn’t anything like that (laughter). All I ever did was go to the training room to sing so I think I found joy in other things like that.

I still have my bike and ride it when I’m going to the convenience store in front of our dorm. (Do you let the members borrow it?) No, if I let someone borrow it and they get into an accident, it’ll be an upset year for me. I’m very strict with what’s mine and what doesn’t belong to me. (B-Bomb: So that’s why he always wears the other members’ panties, haha!) Hey, I’m wearing mine today! (laughter)

Excluding my father, my entire family is type AB blood. There’s the stereotype that AB types are either geniuses or psychos, and our family fits into the stereotype somewhat in that they all have very distinct hobbies and only do what they need to do. My mom doesn’t interfere with my life so I just grew up on my own. I think I grew up normally, without any stress.

The ‘baby Taeil’ image on Match Up isn’t like my real self at all. (U-Kwon: He really is a baby. Zico: When he wakes up in the morning, the first thing he says is, “Give me food!” P.O: Should I show you his diapers?) Sigh, I don’t know how this is happening (laughter).
10ASIA (NATE) VITALSIGN@BLOCKBINTL (bontheblock)

JAEHYO
My name is Jaehyo, and my real name is Ahn Jaehyo. I’m Block B’s sub-vocalist. I was born on December 23rd, 1990, and I have a hyung two years older than me. He’s currently taking a break, but he’s a law major at Sungkyunkwan University and likes Rainbow’s Woori senior. He’s already served in the army so please find him a girlfriend~

At school, I think I was in the teacher’s room a lot more than my classroom. I don’t know why, but my teachers tended to hate me. I think it’s because I didn’t do my homework and went out with my friends instead of staying behind to study.

Since Busan is my hometown, I’m a Lotte Giants fan. Unfortunately, none of the members watch baseball with me at the dorm so I’ll just watch it on my own through my laptop in the early morning. I do sometimes tear up when I’m watching a particularly moving match.

Before I dreamt of becoming a singer, I wanted to be a person that starred in music videos. I once saw Gavy NJ senior’s music video and thought, “Wow, I want to do something like that too. I think I’d be great as the starring role of a song.”

I was a fitting model before my debut. We were taking photos at Dosan park when Japanese tourists walked by and thought I was Lee Min Ki senior. They began standing in line to get my autograph. (Zico: He looks like Park Kolleen professor. He’s like her son, haha!)

When I first saw Zico, he was a coy high school student. I had heard so much about him before joining the company, but once I actually saw him, he was just a kid in a high school uniform. He was laying down on the training room floor without a word, I actually thought Yukwon was the musical prodigy.

A while ago, a moth the size of a fist came into our dorm. I was playing with Taeil before he headed to the bathroom to wash his face. He suddenly screamed so i went to check and found a moth flying around. We both ran away to our rooms and began texting each other, asking what to do. We opened the door and saw a moth near the bathroom and thought of this as the opportunity to close the door on him! Then, we waited until Yukwon came home. (U-Kwon: I went into the dorm and found a Hello Kitty memo on the door that said, ‘You’re fucked if you open the door.’ B-Bomb: The moth wasn’t the size of a fist. U-Kwon: About the size of two fingers?) No, it’s bigger when it opens its wings!

Anyway, the moth that I was too afraid to even catch, I ended up having to eat on MBC Every1’s ‘Bokbulbok Show’. For the members, I had to eat canned silkworm moths. (Kyung: He really didn’t have to eat it.) Hey! You’re the one that said, “You have to eat, why aren’t you eating it?” when the cameras were rolling! (Zico: We were going to let it slide if he insisted that he couldn’t eat it.) Haha… I’m the member that always gets shoved in the corner like this.

We’re still a family though and this is our way of showing our affections, so it’s okay. I lived in a really strict household so I love atmospheres like this.
10ASIA (NATE) VITALSIGN@BLOCKBINTL (bontheblock)

U-Kwon
My name is U-Kwon. My real name is Kim Yookwon. I’m in charge of dancing and being the smile representative in Block B. My birthday is April 9th, 1992 I was born in Ahnyang.

I have one older brother who is 6 years older than I am that looks exactly like me. After I made my debut, he was bitter. He asked me to help him become a celebrity. Haha. Not too long ago, it was his birthday (on August 9th), but he left for military training. Hyung, happy birthday!

I spent my high school days soldering and refining metal. I was in the electronics and machinery field of Ahnyang High School. I got compliments for being able to put LED right and solder well. Heuheuheu.

When I first met the members, Kyung introduced himself to me and said he got into the company as a visual of the team. Since then, he overflowed with confidence. Jiho’s first impression was very strong considering his looks so I thought, “Ah, he must have been the jjang (best fighter) at his school.” (Laughter). Seeing Jaehyo hyung, I thought of looks. (Jaehyo: Looks and singing!)

I was in charge of dancing in our team but when B-Bomb hyung came in, I was pushed back. Seeing B-Bomb hyung for the first time, I knew that he seemed like he danced well. Meanwhile, Taeil hyung looked like he could dance really well but he just sings well. Hahaha. I was worried on what I should do and I decided to work harder in various areas. And in order to achieve looks, I lost weight too.

Originally, I preferred pop more than hip hop. I like senior BEAST’s music and after being in Block B, I began listening more to hip hop. Kyung tipped me first on raps and other music in that area that I should listen to. (Park Kyung: That’s right, Kyung told him!).

When we go eat, the standards we have for our menu is (Zico: The one that’s the cheapest!). So that’s why we tend to eat chicken mayonnaise bento box often. It’s nearby the hair salon we go to. The words we’re most scared of is a credit card being maxed-out. Not too long ago, we were coming back from a schedule and we had to put gas in our car but the card was maxed-out so Jaehyo hyung paid. It was 10 manwon (roughly 100USD)!!

Jaehyo hyung tends to over-exaggerate. If something is stuck in his eye, he has sty and if his chest feels suffocating, he’s developing cancer. If he coughs a little bit, it’s the flu and if his hair is a bit out of line, then he’s screwed for the day. (Jaehyo: Because I listen to hip hop, I think I tend to over-exaggerate certain things. Haha!).

I can’t play baseball well, but I want to be in the KBS show . Because if you’re in there, you can learn everything. I wish a program like this for soccer will be made in the future. I can’t do feet tricks well, but I used to be a goalkeeper.

After the first episode of was aired, the writer of the show apologized to chairman Cho PD saying that they felt as if they didn’t protect our images well, but he said “You can release stronger ones than that.” Maintaining our image? We have none. But when I lost my sanity was when I was able to see senior TVXQ’s stage on a special for KBS .
10ASIA (10.asiae), seoulfoood@BLOCKBINTL (bontheblock)

B-BOMB
My stage name is B-Bomb, and my real name is Lee Minhyuk. I’m Block B’s dancing machine. I was born on December 4th, 1990, and I’m an only child.

That’s why I want to raise a… little sister? in our dorm. A lot of people say that they fight with their younger sisters but I don’t understand that. I think if I had a younger sister, I would do everything she wanted me to. (Kyung: You have to raise her strong! I’m going to give out the proper consequences! If she does something wrong, I’ll hit her hand! Jaehyo: I’ll never allow staying out all night! P.O: I’m going to teach her how to do house work and Zico hyung will teach her about life.) Then I’ll… teach her how to cook.

Ever since high school, I was just the kid that always danced. I’d dance and hold battles with my friends after school and even took part in competitions. When I first joined our current company, Jaehyo told me, “You can come here, let’s eat together.” He took care of me well so I thought he had trained here for at least a year until I found out that he actually joined a day before me.

At the time, Kyung always wore his hat around so I couldn’t see his face clearly. (Kyung: I wore hats so much then that I’m beginning to lose hair in the front. If anyone knows any good places where they do hair implants, please suggest some for me…)

In our dorm, Zico, P.O, Taeil, Kyung, and U-Kwon share the same room while I share a room with Jaehyo and our manager hyung. We chose who we wanted to be roommates with.

When we talk amongst ourselves, there’s someone that tosses in a topic and someone that spikes it. It goes like, toss-toss-toss-spike. (Jaehyo: The leaders are Kyung and Zico! Zico: I don’t lead. I only take in. Kyung’s the leader of tossing~)

Since seven men live in one dorm, there are times where another member will be wearing my underwear. (Jaehyo: Underwear is like your girlfriend, how could you not remember whose you’re wearing?) But sometimes, even when it’s not theirs, they’ll always lie and claim that it is!

The moment where I wanted to baby Taeil was when he was crying tears the size of chicken eggs while watching 4MEN senior’s stage.

While preparing fo rour Match Up mini-concert, we practiced a lot and made a lot of ideas. I had a lot of fun during that and we all promised each other to succeed enough to open our own concert.

When that day comes, we want to show off a more sound-oriented performance. It’s not that our visual performance is weak or anything, and I fully believe that if we mix the two together, we’ll make for an impressive concert.

A man’s charm? I think it comes from his wallet.
10ASIA (NATE) VITALSIGN@BLOCKBINTL (bontheblock)

P.O
My name is P.O. My real name is Pyo Jihoon. I am in charge of the endless charisma rap in Block B. I was born on February 2nd, 1993. I’m currently attending Hanlim Entertainment and Arts High School.

Ever since my first year of junior high, I wanted to be a rapper. And in order to go to an arts school, I learned acting as a specialty. If the opportunity comes, I want to act too. But after going on more music programs!

During junior high, I caused…a lot of trouble. In high school, I went out a lot. My friends and I would come up with ideas and put up 15 minute-long skits on stage. Although we would spend 2 months without much sleep, it was something we wanted to do so it was fun.

When choosing the Block B members in the beginning, I was eliminated. Back then, I was chubby and had a perm so I guess that was why I was dropped. But after being eliminated, I thought, “Huh, you’re going to eliminate me? I’m a person who will succeed and you’re eliminating me? Wait and see. I’m going!”

And after losing 10kg, I auditioned again and they qualified me in seeing how much effort I put. My techniques in dieting? Of course I starved. I haven’t gained it back or anything yet.

When I first saw Jiho hyung…I thought he was really ugly. But he rapped really well so he looked even more awesome outweighing his looks. He really seems like a genius! Jaehyo hyung is too good looking so I thought he was a foreigner. When I first saw Taeil hyung, he was tiny and cute. When I first saw Kyung hyung (Park Kyung: I was a legend, right?). Yes, he was a legend.

A celebrity that looks like me is Taeil hyung. There was a time where we went to go sing a congratulatory song for a wedding and we had the same hair style at the time, so the picture taken on that day became a legendary picture.

I used to really have a sweet voice when I was younger, but after not maintaining my voice well when puberty hit around, my voice got deep. In impersonating senior Jo Kwon with this voice was possible because it was a talent I practiced a lot before our debut.

If Block B were to have their solo concert, I want to show everyone the full version of all our songs that came out till then.

The outfit I’m wearing now used to be hip hop-styled pants that used to come down to my knees but after washing it over and over again, it shrunk this much. (B-Bomb: But we have to like it. we are liking it right now. U-Kwon: My outfit is a one piece so if I raise my arms, a certain part pulls up. At first, it was embarrassing and I freaked out but now, I think I stretched the outfit out a bit).

Being an only child and having both parents work, I didn’t like being home alone. I purposely would bring friends over and have them spend the night and after being in this team, I was given hyungs. I thought everything would be well if we all lived in a dorm together, but there are good and bad things to it. Haha. (Zico: But you always sleep at the dorm when you have time instead of sleeping at home!).

This caused a really long and drawn out debate on tumblr and I didn't say anything abt it bec tbh there are lots of ppl who cannot stand back and assess both sides before they speak.

Were his lyrics acceptable? No, not even if it's a ~norm~ in hiphop. Not even if there have been 'worse' lyrics. It's discriminating and that's that. idk why fans are hellbent on defending him, everyone makes mistakes because of ignorance at some point in their lives. People need to accept that and get over themselves.

But I don't stick permanent labels people quickly for something they did when they were young (because some kids can do stupid things w/out giving much thought), and I can only hope Kyung has matured and never does something like this again.

I love all their little side comments in each other's interviews
The thought of UKwon losing his mind over TVXQ's stage is adorable. P.O. is blunt as fuck LOL, I mean straight up saying he though Zico was ugly.
Taeil is such a sweetheart <3

The side comments were the funniest thing about it.

Aquarian P.O. striking with his bluntness. lol though at him saying that Jaehyo was so pretty he thought he was foreign. Aww U-Kwon it's DBSK who wouldn't go crazy?

I knew it! I wasn't the only one who thought Jae Hyo looked like Lee Min Ki.
It's interesting to read about the members though :D. Thanks OP!

So much delicious info and I loved the comments by other members during the personal interviews. They just feel so FREE and fresh.

And I still can't get over Zico, he's a spazz but there's this mature, driven side to it that makes me go all nnnnngh! I think he'll be very, very big. First with BB and later, even more so, by himself.

(and omg Kyung. At least he's honest of being a grease?)

I have a hyung two years older than me. He’s currently taking a break, but he’s a law major at Sungkyunkwan University and likes Rainbow’s Woori senior. He’s already served in the army so please find him a girlfriend~

omg LOL, Jaehyo sneaking in a personal ad for his older brother.
