There’s a hot new girl group in town, and they just released their debut digital single “Syndrome” on August 17th. Chocolat– a five-member girl group, three of which have American fathers and Korean mothers — made headlines for being bi-racial members, but that’s not all there is to these girls.
When they sat down for an interview with StarIn, they stated, “If we thought we were going to be “just another girl group”, we wouldn’t have even started this whole thing“.
They continued, “All five of us are very unique individuals and we possess different talents. The five of us together make a powerful group.”
Jae Yoon (20) is the main vocalist, Min Soa (22) can sing a range of different musical styles including Korean Trot, Tia (15) can dance freestyle to any genre of music, Juliane (18) has great vocal tone, and Melanie (15) has a great sense of humor and brings in a lot of energy into the group.
As talented as they are, Chocolat is afraid that people will have preconceived notions about them because they are a bi-racial group. Since the girls are also pretty, they are a bit worried people will stereotype them as a group who focuses on looks, rather than talent.

Melanie, Tia, and Juliane are of mixed race and they’re not sure how they will handle the attention they’ll receive based on the fact that they look different from most Korean girl groups.
“We are thankful for the extra attention, however, we want people to know that we too are Korean and we don’t want to be treated any differently.”
Jae Yoon and Min Soa also stated, “None of us have ever gone under the knife. We are 100% natural beauties. People think otherwise because we are mixed, but we really haven’t gotten any plastic surgery. Our agency’s president told us no, anyway.”
Chocolat states that although there is a lot of pressure, they are enjoying it.
“Expectations are high for us so we were worried we wouldn’t be able to live up to them. But we are working hard so that we do not disappoint. ”
They concluded, ”We don’t want to stop at Korea; we want our names to be known all over the world. That’s our main goal. …In the beginning, we worried we wouldn’t be able to pull this off, or we wouldn’t be successful. But the important thing is that we won’t give up until we’re known worldwide. We want to show you everything we’ve prepared so far. Watch out for Chocolat!
Chocolat reveals that they trained for 12 hours a day for two years

The ladies of bi-racial girl group Chocolat recently sat down for a new interview with Star News to give some insight on their personalities and future goals.
Check it out below!

(Melanie): “Hello! I’m Chocolat’s 15 year old maknae, Melanie. My specialties are singing and cheerleading. You’ll be able to see my cheerleading skills soon. I was born in Korea and moved to Hawaii when I was eight. I lived there for about a year and a half before I moved back to Korea. My father was a soldier in the U.S. Armed Forces in Korea, but he’s retired now. My mother has known Tia’s mother for 30 years so it was through Tia that I found out about the audition and joined. I’ve trained for about two years. Please give a lot of love to our Tia.”

–
(Tia): “I’m Chocolat’s cutie dancer, Tia. I was born in California and moved to Japan six months after I was born (that’s what my parents told me). My father was a soldier in the U.S. Armed Forces in Korea and met my mother and fell in love. When I was six, my parents moved back to Korea. Since then, I’ve worked in a lot of children’s TV programs teaching English. We moved back to Japan three years later but I wasn’t able to learn a lot of Japanese because we stayed in the units. Two years later, when I was 12, I began dreaming of becoming a singer. I practiced dancing a lot at home and later met my agency CEO, which is how I joined Chocolat. I was also a model in Japan (laughter).”

–
(Juliane) “I was born in Korea and moved to Texas when I was six. We lived there for five years before coming back to Korea. My father was also a soldier in the U.S. Armed Forces in Korea. My mother is friends with Melanie’s mother, and it was through Melanie that I auditioned and joined the team. I’m the vocalist of Chocolat. I’ve always been consoled by music ever since I was little, so I dreamt of singing for others who are going through hard times.”

–
(Min Soa) “I’m Chocolat’s leader, Soa. My parents are both Korean and I was born and raised in Korea until high school. When I turned 17, I went to study abroad in Brisbane, Australia until I turned 22. I majored in art in college but still had a dream of becoming a singer. Through the introduction of another person, I sent a demo recording to our current CEO. He liked my voice and invited me to join the group because he felt that Chocolat needed an unni. A year ago, I came to Korea and formed a team with Tia and Melanie.”

–
(Jae-Yoon) “While in college, I found out about Chocolat through an audition. I auditioned and joined the team. I’m currently the team’s main vocalist and I hope to become to work hard with our dongsengs and unnis to make Chocolat a girl group that’s loved all around the world.”

Q. “Even before you’ve made your debut, you’re already earning headlines for being a bi-racial girl group.”
Tia: “Our friends saw the articles that went out and supported us a lot. We don’t, however, want to earn attention for being a bi-racial girl group. For the past two years, we’ve trained over 12 hours a day to perfect our vocals, rap, and dance skills. After our debut track, “Syndrome“, gets released on August 17th, we’re sure that everyone will be able to see our talents then. I’m repeating myself, but I really want our group to be recognized for our talents, not for being bi-racial.”
-
Q. “There’s a lot of girl group competition out there. What do you think the distinguishing factor for Chocolat is?”
Min Soa: “Each of our members have something unique about them. Girls of such different charms have come together in one group to show a new color.”
-
Q. “Could you introduce your debut track, ‘Syndrome‘?”
Jae-Yoon: “‘Syndrome’ is a powerful song that combines both dancing and singing. It’s highly addictive, but has lovely lyrics. We’re sure you’ll fall in love with it when you listen.”
-
Q. “Do you have a girl group role model?”
Chocolat: “2NE1 seniors and f(x) seniors. They’re unique and have such great talent, we hope to learn a lot from them. Of course, we will be protecting our own unique color.”
-
Q. “Goals for the year?”
Chocolat: “Getting our name known is our biggest year. We also want to take home a rookie award, so we’re going to work our absolute hardest.”
-
Q. “What are your determinations for the future?”
Chocolat: “Amidst such strong girl group competition, we hope to create a ‘Chocolat syndrome’. In the future, when people mention ‘talented girl groups’, we hope that our name Chocolat is thought of first.”
