Korea’s foremost music icon Seo Tae-ji has started an environmental campaign to save polar bears. This is an extension of his eighth album, which warned of the impending environmental disasters.

Together with the director of the Teddy Bear Museum in Jeju Island, Seo has launched the Save the Polar Bears campaign. Under the motto, “A Temperature Difference That Changes the World,” the campaign will sell polar bear dolls and merchandises on and offline and all the profits will be donated to the Polar Bear International. The merchandises will be sold on www.etpshop.com and the eight venues of Seo’s nationwide concert tour. Seo also plans to establish an environmental fund with the proceeds from the Seo Tae-ji credit card marketed in May.

Seo has chosen polar bears as his first environmental project, because these majestic animals symbolize the destruction of earth’s environment and the devastating effects it has on our future.

Good for him. I don't want any polar bears going extinct while I'm alive. Anyone know any good charities for things like this?

Awesome! Does that mean I may see Taiji in Canada one day? Since Polar bears are native to the great white north.

someone should mesh together a picture of seo taiji and a polar bear and that could be the new campaign mascot.

something tells me that the world would want this very very much.

I love the bag - having recently gotten the chance to photograph polar bears for the first time I'm way in favour of this. They're such beautiful animals up close.

Hmm. This is highly questionable. Seo's campaign doesn't really achieve anything at all. He's doen the barest minimum: raising awareness. And by getting people to take the easiest possible route: throw money at a problem. All this merchandise is just generating more rubbish. The only thing that is remotely usable is that bag he's selling and really, to call something an eco-bag--which a lot of people, not just him, are doing--is really the height of stupidity. We don't need anybody to specially create and ship over a tote bag. Anything will do--paper bags from shopping, carrying one's own plastic bags instead of accepting them at the checkout counter, an old school bag, stitching one out of old clothes.

What Seo Tae Ji has done is to spearhead a campaign that means nearly nothing. It's to let people feel good about themselves by throwing money at an organisation and not really having to change, to think about what they have doen and what they still have to do. It's irresponsible. This campaign changes nothing. On top of it all, it doesn't even change people's mindsets. Once again, it's about buying stuff. Why can't he just use his interviews and time with the media to explain the threat of global warming and express support for various organisations, and getting people to truly make donations--without the promise of teddy bears at the end of it?

Awhile a good cause he could have made a much bigger impact by choosing to campaign against keeping of bile bears (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bile_bear) in China and Vietnam, but I guess that would have been more controversial cause.
