Many have probably expected it by now, but Sunny Hill’s latest music video for “Prayer” has been banned from broadcast networks KBS and MBC because of its “abusive nature.”

The music video was unveiled on August 5th, but fans unfortunately won’t be seeing it on TV any time soon as it failed to pass the regulations for KBS and MBC. Loen Entertainment replied, “Both broadcast networks criticized the scene where the man sticks a needle in the mutant’s head to draw blood.”

Other scenes were brought up for questioning, such as the scene where Misung and Janghyun chase the mutant to shoot him down with a tranquilizer, and another scene where his death is predicted with a jar containing his ear. The scenes were said to have raised issues of abuse.

Loen Entertainment continued, “We’re currently discussing whether or not we will be re-submitting the movie for another evaluation. The movie is of a sorrowful nature, which fits the song’s atmosphere. We hope that people will look at the story as a whole as opposed to picking apart the scenes.”

i'm not a child, but i was pretty triggered by it and had to stop watching, js.

it's the first time i've agreed that there should probably be a warning on something in kpop, but i think you can't always assume that just because you were totally fine watching the casual abuse that went on in that MV that everyone is?

seriously? you had to stop watching?
what part made you do this (genuinely wondering)

yeah, i did. i seriously had to stop watching. and i find that a slightly distressing question, since clearly i didn't enjoy watching it and might not want to talk about it. i was uneasily peering at the screen, but what tipped me over was the scene in question--the researcher taking a blood sample from the guy's head. the associations with actual abuse were really, really uncomfortable, and it didn't at all feel fantastical to me. it's a very macabre MV, and i have no qualms with the restrictions being placed on its airing.

to be clear, though, it's not the scene itself--it's the leadup. it's the clear way that the guy is portrayed as a child--unknowing, unsure, not quite understanding what's been done to him. it reeked of child-abuse, in my books, and physically nauseated me. so i had to stop watching, because i was triggered.

did i answer your question?

yes I agree, the fact that he has the mental capacity of a child is what makes this video so heartbreaking.

your take was really interesting to read, thanks. Also, I hope you didn't feel as if I was attacking you - if you had replied that you were uncomfortable going into details I would have understood.

...Korea you're really ridic. I mean...don't they have a watershed hour on their TV schedules? I mean, I know that the reason that, Korean movies are so much better than their dramas, is because the TV is a family thing, so it's harder to control who watches what, but at least get a watershed, you know, being able to show 'explicit' things after a certain time.

Date: 2011-08-05 09:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] askbask.livejournal.com
I'm pretty sure what these 'banned' articles refer to IS a ban before the watershed. Need someone else to confirm that as I have no clue about this particular case, but that's what has been done before anyway.

Don't they sometimes say that some videos can't be shown before x hour (10pm comes to my mind)? I'm not sure either, though, but I'm pretty sure I've read that here in omona, too, in some other entry's comments.

Truth is that this scene is creepy but I don't want them to remake the mv because it's awesome like that even if it's banned. The broadcast networks lose, not the group.

From: [identity profile] jaenovation.livejournal.com
In this case I actually do understand the ban. Even though it's a good MV, it is creepy, and not everyone can handle it.

This MV is so sad, really unique too. Why don't they just put a disclaimer before the video that says "Might be disturbing to some viewers" and then people can choose if they want to watch it or not. Simple.

Korea is really over censoring and it's silly. How does this committee work anyways, is it all up to them what gets banned or is it based on public complaint?

Ok, I was going to say that even though I think that just putting a warning at the beginning would have worked, I ~kind of~ understood it because it would have scared me as a child (it's creepy, true, but it's also true that I was easy to scare as a kid, really easy). Then I read it was because of the needle scene. Sorry, but LOL. Lame reason.

all horror movies are creepy and triggering to me. Just from watching a horror movie I have lasting flashbacks. So therefore, I want all television channels to ban them.

/makes just about as much sense

If anything, they should just include a warning. banning it seems a bit much, but then again that's kpop for you~

I'm horrified of needles, like seriously freaked out, but that scene didn't bug me. I think it's because I knew it wasn't actually real.

And I don't get how the chasing scene is bad. If that can get a video banned then why not ban the DBSK video where Yunho and Changmin are part of the FBI?

as freaked out as i was by watching the mv once, i watched it again and i felt really sad, i don't think this mv needs to be banned.

kids watch TMNT and they aren't creeped out (even if it is a cartoon) and its an mv jfc no need to get all censor-y about it.
