2FLAWLESS1 Talk Confidence & Feeling "Ugly"

The ladies of 2NE1 are now famous in the K-Pop industry for their confident style, but they still managed to turn quite a few heads when they came out with “Ugly“.

In their interview with OSEN, the girls were asked if they ever felt ‘ugly’ like in their lyrics. Fans were surprised to read Dara’s answer, who laughed, “Yes, when I’m wearing a feminine style. I’m always dressed like a man on stage, so I feel a loss of confidence when I’m wearing more feminine styles.”

Bom replied, “I don’t specially feel ugly or anything, but I don’t have confidence when I get my song wrong.“ Minzy said, “I feel that way when I’m trying to improve and advance, but when it’s not going out the way I want it to.”

CL said, “I don’t feel especially ugly, but I do get into a slump sometimes. Like the lyrics of ‘Ugly’ state, I do feel lonely at times.”

In reverse, the girls were then asked for the time where felt that they were amazing. Bom said, “When I’m singing. I love singing and I’m the most confident in it.“ Dara agreed, “It’s easy for me to feel confident when I’m on stage. The shouts of our fans thrill me and I truly feel like I’m the best for the three minutes I’m on stage.”

Minzy expressed, “When I’m dancing to my solo part”, while CL said, “If I don’t feel confident on stage, then the people that are watching and listening to us won’t feel it either. I have to be the best on stage so that the audience feels the same way. I go up on stage thinking that I’m going to be the best.”

Ya, it's definitely not my fave song by them. I think they do best with the dance/electronic style everyone associates them with. I do appreciate the message of the song though, it was very bold for them to release it as this kind of stuff isn't really talked about in k-pop.

Me too. Seeing people's different take on it is really interesting. And at first I didn't like it but now I'm singing to it around my house and stuff. It's kinda awkward because of the lyrics though and I half expect my little brothers to make an immature comment like "Yes, you are ugly" or smth.

I've actually always been curious about whether or not they are friendly with any of the other girl groups... I hope they don't feel left out because they ARE sexy and beautiful in their own ways. I love them sooo much.

I'm pretty sure this pic is from backstage at Inki since these are the clothes they wore for the performance of Hate You. They then wore the outfits from the Ugly mv so I would say the stylist is still around.

Some people are only viewing the song as just touching on the physical beauty, but i really think its more to do with the inner beauty. I wish some people would stop pretending that they don't have any insecurities about themselves. The song is as honest as it can get.

I like 2NE1 more than any other kpop group except maybe SES and HOT

but their UGLY song is real similar to Joydrop's "Beautiful" for me, not that it's a copy or anything, but it's the same topic. And the antonym song title.. hmm.



And Joydrop is a real rock band.


But the downside is that Joydrop broke up like 10 years ago, and like no one knows about them. Sigh.

People will be surprised to know that pretty girls are about as insecure about their looks as any other girl, and in some cases, more. Everyone will feel ugly at some point, whether its about something they done or how they are physically lacking. All in all, i love this song.

This. Some people are like 'It doesn't feel real because 2NE1 is pretty'. Uhm. Pretty girls have image issues too. Almost everyone has them. People can call you pretty all day everyday, but at the end of the day all that matters is what YOU think of yourself. Otherwise those compliments fade or you don't beleive them and they end up meaning nothing or even worse, you start to value yourself for your beauty.

I loved this song at first listen. Rock was my first musical love and I'm loving that it's been infused in my kpop. ♥ ♥ ♥ The lyrics resonate a lot for me because though I'm a 24 year-old girl, I still feel pretty shitty sometimes despite my sisters and others telling me I'm gorgeous just the way I am.

I still have to tell myself what they do: I'm beautiful, I'm beautiful, I'm beautiful. Or, aren't we all ugly somehow? Food for thought.

That said, yes I cried the first time I read the translation. It resonates. Yes I totally belted out the chorus in my kitchen when no one was home this evening. It felt GREAT.

I love these girls. That song made me love them more. IDK, I know it's supposed to be an image, like they're being marketed as this group that sings about girl power, and feeling ugly, being real, etc., but I can't help but like them. It seems authentic to me.
