Date: 2011-07-23 11:02 pm (UTC)If you ask me it is very hard to find a clear winner here. They have different styles and different voices which appeal to people in different ways. Personally I'd choose Im Taekyung for the best voice in combination with technique, Lee Hyuk and Taewoo for the entertaining performance aspect (dear god Lee Hyuk) and tie of barely-performed song for Lee Seokhoon and K.Will. Slightly disappointed I was of Hwanhee and Wheesung, their performance just didn't come over to me. I expected more of Wheesung, to be honest.
In the end this really made me appreciate all the great voices. I'll check out all of them (excluding K.Will, Taewoo and Wheesung, because I already have...obviously).

Date: 2011-07-23 09:35 pm (UTC)Lee Sukhoon - I really loved the instrumentation of this one, so kudos to whoever composed it and to the musicians who played it. I feel like Sukhoon always tends to make those faces while he sings and it's difficult to not cross over the line into plain humorous. However, I did love the long belt-y notes, though I thought the last one was one too many.
Hwanhee - Hwanhee tends to overstylize and have an excess of vibrato. This performance was a bit slow for my tastes - it almost felt draggy. Even though Hwanhee had all of these higher notes and these vocal runs, I felt like it never went anywhere. I will say, though, there was this one moment where Hwanhee was taking a pause in his singing and you could see emotion in his eyes - that was lovely. Overall, though, I don't think it was the best song choice.
Kim Taewoo - Taewoo is always so fun to watch on stage and I've always loved his voice. It was interesting how he had a "money note" so early in the piece. It was apparent that Taewoo really put an effort into creating an atmosphere for this song (In terms of the idol contestants, I would say Taewoo is analogous to Changmin in that sense). Taewoo's performance, though, was great not because of his singing but because he put together a whole package.
K. Will - His falsetto is fantastic, of course. But K. Will also makes those faces when he sings (as all male ballad singers seem to do...) and it just makes me uncomfortable for him. The climax was really great, but I was worried the entire time because it looked painful to be expelling that out of his diaphragm. Vocally, I thought this was great (though for a bit, I thought he was a little flat, but that might just be me) but as an audience member, not as much of a performance.
Im Taekyung - I confess that I'm not familiar with Im Taekyung at all, but a quick Google search tells me that he's a crossover tenor. And you can tell as soon as he starts singing; his voice is lovely. Personal taste, but I prefer voices like Im Taekyung's to husky voices that often sound like overwrought crying to me. I really loved that one moment where he did that rock-y thing where the instrumentals take a pause and he like throws his voice (Blech, I don't even know how to describe it) but I loved it because it demonstrates what he's best at but still showing that he took on a challenge.
Lee Jung - This was a lovely performance. It was a bit of a risk - the song and its arrangement is more on the side of understated and quiet than in-your-face. But although it was simple, Lee Jung had the skill to pull it off and just capture your attention. I will say that although I thought the one piece of showing-off-his-voice was well-placed, I did feel like the going-up of the second time was unnecessary and it would've been better if he had just gone up once (if that makes any sense).
Wheesung - I quite like Wheesung in general, although occasionally I find his singing style to be a bit...affected? But I appreciated how from the get-go, you could tell that you were going to get a taste of Wheesung's style and I liked how he clearly put effort into the wardrobe and the dancing. Yet even though I could tell Wheesung was putting a lot of energy into this performance, for me, it didn't translate through to me getting excited. I felt like there were too many vocal tricks and not enough singing. His big note at the end was great, though.
Lee Hyuk - I loved how versatile his voice is - at the beginning, it sounded like such a classically-styled voice and then of course, he was just amazing at singing in a rock style. This was one of those performances where you just sit there, gaping at how that kind of sound can be made with the human voice. It is incredibly difficult to sing like that and yet Lee Hyun did it and was consistently solid throughout. I'm curious as to how the voting ended up because it seemed to me that the audience was even older than usual and I don't know how acceptable to their palate this kind of singing would be.
Overall, all of these singers are incredible and all of these performances were great. I'm excited for the female special!

Date: 2011-07-23 10:51 pm (UTC)The Changmin/Taewook comparison is a fitting one and I agree SFM about the "gaping at how that kind of sound can be made with the human voice" voice part of Lee Hyuk.
I also felt similar about Wheesung and Hwanhee. About K.Will, as much he is my #1 bias he was very pale in comparison performance wise.
