Following rumours of his interest in the project, it has today been confirmed by Mandate Pictures that Spike Lee will direct the forthcoming remake of South Korean modern cinematic classic Oldboy.
Mark Protosevich has adapted the screenplay and will co-produce the Vertigo Entertainment/40 Acres & A Mule Production, with producers Roy Lee and Doug Davison (The Departed, The Grudge).
Mandate President Nathan Kahane will executive produce the remake and comments on Lee’s involvement; “It’s a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director.”
Directed by Chan-wook Park and released in 2003, the original film won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, telling the story of a man kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday for 15 years without explanation – which [obviously] becomes his mission on his eventual release, with plenty of eye-catching visuals and twisted plot revelations along the way.
Well.. The original film felt like perfection to me, not having contemplated the need for a remake – but catch me first in line.

Date: 2011-07-11 08:45 pm (UTC)Oldboy is my favorite film...why can't they just heavily promote the original? Granted during the Virginia Tech massacre, the movie wasn't in a good light but really...this movie is perfection & shouldn't be remade. Period.
