Following rumours of his interest in the project, it has today been confirmed by Mandate Pictures that Spike Lee will direct the forthcoming remake of South Korean modern cinematic classic Oldboy.

Mark Protosevich has adapted the screenplay and will co-produce the Vertigo Entertainment/40 Acres & A Mule Production, with producers Roy Lee and Doug Davison (The Departed, The Grudge).
Mandate President Nathan Kahane will executive produce the remake and comments on Lee’s involvement; “It’s a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director.”

Directed by Chan-wook Park and released in 2003, the original film won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, telling the story of a man kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday for 15 years without explanation – which [obviously] becomes his mission on his eventual release, with plenty of eye-catching visuals and twisted plot revelations along the way.

Well.. The original film felt like perfection to me, not having contemplated the need for a remake – but catch me first in line.

DNW. DNWWWW.
Oldboy is my favorite film...why can't they just heavily promote the original? Granted during the Virginia Tech massacre, the movie wasn't in a good light but really...this movie is perfection & shouldn't be remade. Period.

Oldboy is one of them films that should be made legally untouchable.

I don't mind remakes. They just have to be done well. Some people just do not want to see a foreign film. I'm all for a good remake that if it makes some people see the original, then I approve.

I hope it's just incomplete reporting but this article doesn't mention the manga/orginal source material. It sounds like they are remaking PCW's version but how can you do that and not use the manga? idk

I don't think most of them know that old boy was a remake from a japanese manga.

No but seriously, don't they ever get it? The Korean originals are so great because they're Korean. There's so many cultural references that make them unique.

Like My sassy girl. How does that shit even work in Amurrican.

Also, is he going to eat a live cow.

I can't think of an American/Hollywood equivalent to when he eats the live squid. I'm not sure the FDA even allows that at American restaurants.

ia My Sassy Girl just doesn't, there are WAY too many culture-exclusive things in that one.

How is it a Korean Original if it's based off a Japanese manga lmao????????

Wut cultural references are you talking about <______<

I haven't watched this movie but the trailer & the synopsis made it sound really good, gonna watch it later.

remakes usually ruin movies for me though, so idk how this will turn out...hopefully good.

So they are saying this could either be really good (The Departed) or really bad (The Grudge). Hmm.

From: [identity profile] finchburg.livejournal.com
The Departed wasn't that good imo.

It wasn't horrible though. At least it wasn't on The Grudge's level of tragic.

... I wasn't really impressesd by pcw's Oldboy, but I like to see how different folk deal with remakes/ similar source material, so.

I like remakes when they're an interpretation of the original work. I think Spike Lee is a great director who doesn't tend to make movies just to fill seats so I'm all for it.

DNW.
Spike Lee is the man, but Oldboy is perfect as it is. No need to remake it.

it'll be interesting to see what he does with it, but imo there's no reason for oldboy to be remade

'Old Boy' is such a perfect film. It's the kind of film that's shocking and fascinating at the same time. I love it. It doesn't really need a remake...

IDK I'll probably watch this anyway and be one of the few who will know and appreciate the fact that PCW did it first. Plus with Spike Lee there is the high possibility of a nice muti racial cast. I hope he finds a way to give it it's own American spin on the culturally shocking parts. Maybe they will eat fresh made scrapple (that stuff is wayyyyyyy worse than live octopus. Mind you I'm philadelphian so I've had scrapple and even though the last time I had some was well over 7 years ago watching it being made from scratch still made me way to empty the ghost scrapple from my stomache.)
