The Hwamyeong Riverside Park in Busan is submerged Sunday following heavy rains in the southern parts of the country. With the rain front moving northward, torrential rains of more than 250 millimeters are expected to hit the central region of the peninsula today
Heavy rains pounded the southern parts of the country over the weekend, killing 10 people and leaving four missing over the last three days, officials from the disaster control center said Sunday.
The victims included a 68-year-old woman and two of her grandchildren when a landslide destroyed her home Saturday in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, according to the Korean National Emergency Management Agency.
Southern regions in Gwangyang, South Cheolla Province; Sancheong, North Gyeongsang Province; and Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, received over 400 milliliters of rain since Friday.
The rain front, affecting the southern parts of the country, is slowly moving northward and expected to affect central parts of the country today, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
“A downpour is expected in the central regions including Seoul with 250 milliliters of rain forecast until late today,” a KMA official said, advising people to take extra care. “People should refrain from going to mountains or valleys.”
