Twitch has learned that Spike Lee is currently in talks to direct the long-rumored Hollywood remake of Park Chan-Wook´s Oldboy.

Word of a US remake of the Park Chan-Wook revenge classic first surfaced in 2008 with word that both Steven Spielberg (in some capacity) and Will Smith were eyeing the project and now it appears to finally be moving ahead.

The film is set up at Mandate with Doug Davison and Roy Lee producing and Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) writing the script.

Lee is a shocking but intriguing prospect to direct this material and a damn sight more interesting than most of the director´s whose names have been floated as possibilities over the years. As for Smith, there´s no word yet if he is still involved but the man did just refuse the lead role of Tarantino´s Django Unchained, which would suggest he´s got something else in the works.

...Why would you remake Oldboy, it's already perfect. :| I feel like every time American directors have remade a Korean movie, it has completely sucked.

The najority of Americans are allergic to subtittles, this is why if a film in a diffrent language becomes succsesfull, hollywood remake it.

i still don't understand why will smith would take on this kind of project

unless it was to completely neuter it

Right now the only hollywood actors I can support doing this would be Benicio or Gary Oldman types. Older, kind of crazy, capable of great emotional range. If this ever happens we will get stuck with someone younger and just so so so so so not right for the role, sigh.

Please don't, somethings should just be left the way they are
and Will Smith, no thanks...can never picture him in Oldboy even though he is a talented actor

I'm a fan of most of Spike Lee's work but I don't really see the need for a remake. But that's Hollywood, I guess.

THIS. He probably would do a good job with a remake, but it's unnecessary, really.

Fuuuuuuuuuu I'd take almost anyone but Spike Lee
He'll find some way to make it political or about race and I ain't trying to hear that shit.

Why not just dub it or subtitle it well to the big screen?

The movie is already perfectly violent and repulsive.

Wtf is wrong with you all? Spike Lee is a really good director and even though this isn't necessary, Hollywood remakes everything so at least a good director (who'll probably cast appropriate actors) won't whitewash and dilute the whole thing into a shitfest and make it interesting. I mean Inside Man anyone??!!!

I don't think most people (excluding the GD icon person above) have a problem with Spike Lee but talks about this remake have been circulating for a while and people were opposed then and the idea of Will Smith or Spielberg being involved is still more negative than anything. Like there have to be other revenge stories out there. I would rather Spike adapt Anansi Boys or something into a movie than something that has already been made into an almost perfect film.

I thought Sympathy for Mr Vengeance was 10000 x better than Oldboy. AN OPINION NOBODY ELSE SHARES.

Mr Vengeance = under-appreciated.

Lady V is my favorite of the three but Mr is also very very good. I can see why people who might have seen Oldboy first would not be as impressed by Mr. Mr is such a slower boil in some respects and definitely not as flashy, it's much more cerebral. But still very very good. That shot where he is walking in the water with Mr V on his back and the blood is pooling behind them is GORGEOUS.

Funny , I just went thru a list of foreign movies yesterday and chose this movie as one of my "want to see".

Can't tell yet whether I want a remake or not , but remakes are usually bad so...
