More than four out of every 10 South Koreans are afraid of walking outside late at night, a police poll showed Sunday, indicating a relatively high level of public anxiety over security at night.
According to the poll by the National Police Agency, 43.7 percent of the total 28,103 respondents said they feel threatened when walking along streets late at night while only 28 percent responded they don’t.
The poll also found that 37.1 percent are afraid of being robbed, while just 30.7 percent are not afraid of such crimes.
Asked about fairness in the way the police deals with investigations, 37.5 percent said the police are fair while 13.7 percent responded otherwise.
“On the basis of the poll results, police will continue reformation efforts in order to help reorient police activities toward people’s needs,” a police official said.

Date: 2011-07-06 11:53 pm (UTC)then again it really depends on what kind of area you live in.
I would feel 100% fine going on a short trip in the middle of the night to the convenient tore or something in the suburbs (like Bun Dang) but in Seoul some places are just creepy.
Plus drunks and gangs (=group of 3 or more people conspiring together to pick fights with people) are much more active at night...

Date: 2011-07-07 12:24 am (UTC)I felt relatively safe at night in Korea..I lived in Ansan, but that seems to be known for being somewhat unsafe these days. Of course, I wouldn't walk down a dark alley at 1am or anything. XP

Date: 2011-07-07 01:35 am (UTC)As for foreigners feeling 100% safe in Korea, Korea is mostly homogeneous so chances are people don't want to fuck with you anyway.
They should ask how many people have actually experienced something threatening at night rather than how many people worry IF something threatening will happen at night.
