Six of 10 young S. Koreans unaware of when Korean War started

Six out of 10 young South Koreans are not aware when the Korean War started, a government poll showed on Friday, raising concern about the fading public memory of the 1950-53 war.

In the telephone survey of 1,000 adults and another 1,000 middle and high school students nationwide by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, 57.6 percent of the adults and 55.1 percent of those in the 19-29 age bracket gave the wrong answer to a question on when the war began.

I can't say that I can confirm what you've heard about the way history is taught here in Germany. I remember the holocaust was a big part of not only history class, but also German class where our reading list included several books that told stories of WWII and witness records by holocaust survivors. A lot of teachers will also take their classes on school trips to visit concentration camp sites or the Anne Frank House. WWII in general was a huuuuge topic in school, I remember it reoccurring several times through out the years, so I honestly don't know how anyone could avoid to discuss the topic in depth.
