Baby found dead in subway locker

A single mom, who discarded her newborn baby in a subway locker, is under police investigation, Yonhap News has reported.

The woman, surnamed Kim, 20, said that four days after she gave birth alone in a motel room, she found her son suffocated to death, face down in a blanket.

She apparently then put the dead body in her carrier filled with her clothes, before placing it in the subway locker of Shinpung station.


After making the finding, the management agency of the lockers reported it to the police. Kim was tracked down with a record of the cell phone payment for the locker.

It appears Kim was living a double life, convincing her parents that she was at Seoul National University Department of Law by forging a report card. It has now been revealed that she never entered college and has been residing in a motel in Anyang.

The police contacted her father to arrest Kim, but she refused to meet with him. She was eventually arrested around Sillim Station, accused of the abandonment of a dead body.

Being a single mom is hard, but it's not impossible. My mother raised me and my younger sister on her own for our entire lives, while being abused by my father.

Or she is seriously mentally ill, due to postpartum depression or postpartum psychosis, or the victim of abuse, or under unbearable family and social pressure, or all or these factors and more, and this has prevented her from being capable of caring for the baby properly. I doubt she deliberately killed the baby for funsies.

She deserves all the help she can get but she probably won't get it.

This all sounds so weird and horrific. I hope the baby rests in peace.

I also hope the authorities, look into this properly, and not just put her away or something. In these situations you never know how the mum is handling having a child/having pregnant. We don't know if she was chronically depressed or if she had post-natal depression, if she had any of these issues, it is very possible, that she didn't/couldn't seek professional help.

It doesn't make the babies death, okay or excusable, but just punishing her, without actually seeing if there was a psychological reason to this, would be ridicules.

For all you people baying for blood above, its sounds like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postpartum_psychosis#Symptoms>postpartum psychosis</a> and/or denial of pregnancy could very well be a factor here. It's possible to mourn the death of the child and still feel compassion for someone driven to such desperate acts due to mental illness and extreme social pressure.
