Popular Japanese men’s magazine, ‘GQ Japan‘ will publish a SNSD special in their July issue which will hit newsstands on the 24th. The special issue analyzes the factors to SNSD’s success in the music industry.

According to a report from the ‘Japanese Oricon’ on the 23rd, ‘GQ Japan’ will also present the thorough nurturing program of SM Entertainment. Through an interview with SNSD, the magazine reported that the trainees go through rigorous daily training sessions which can last to upwards of 10 hours a day and usually takes 5 to 8 years to debut.

‘GQ Japan’ also picked out the wide utilization of Youtube as one of the main success factors for SNSD to gain international fans.

The magazine is said to contain an extensive interview with SNSD and this will also mark the first time for SNSD to appear on a Japanese men’s magazine.

Earning approximately $32 million USD in just the first half of this year in Japan, SNSD has lived up to their reputation, marking their name in the Japanese market as a popular group. According to the Japanese ‘Oricon Chart’ on their ‘First Half of 2011 Evaluation’, which was published on the 22nd of June, SNSD has ranked 5th in sales of their singles, albums, DVD, and other materials.

This report included all types of sales starting from December 27th of 2010 to June 20th of 2011. According to the sales report, SNSD sold about 800,000 copies of singles, albums, DVDs, and other materials, earning approximately $32 million USD.

can't wait for the issue & translations to come out because this article didn't say much tbh

Yeah, looking forward to the article. Hopefully it's

"So we hear you made 32 million USD, how much of it do the girls see?"

Still, they're in the money no matter how lousy the percentages might be.

Also I'm more interested in knowing whether 32 million was the total sales or the actual profit. I'm pretty sure they've had to shell out a ton of cash for these Japanese promotions.

I've always wondered what the trainees learn for 5 to 8 years, 24/7? 'cause like, yes they're all very good and all but they're hardly the most talented things ever. I mean, Yoona has been training longer than all the girls (I think?) but she's not the most talented of the whole bunch...They could've at least given her more confidence in her singing.

(That's a legit q btw.)

no, that's a really good point, actually. and i agree about yoona.

you can't teach talent, you either have it or you don't
i would think that most of it is spent trying to hone the skills they already have

I think they just attempt to make them decent in everything. Like someone else said, you can't really teach talent into someone. I think they try to hone what they are good at and teach them not to suck at everything else.

I think yoona has a really well rounded skill set. Yeah she's not the best singer in the world but she sings her lines properly. If you listen to her solos at their concerts you can see that her voice isn't really that bad and she's also a really solid dancer .

Jessica trained the longest btw

And then the companies use this unnecessarily long training period as justification to control every second of their idol's lives and milk them dry of every cent. When it makes more sense to dramatically decrease the training period and lessen the financial burden on their company.

Well, a lot of them get shipped off to study in Shanghai for a while (Hyoyeon spent more than a year there if I remember correctly).

Also, when they start out at 9 or 10 or 11 years old, how much can you do with them? Sure, Taemin trained for 3 years before debuting, but SME didn't give him any vocal training until after his voice finished breaking - which was several months after he debuted. And obviously they're still going to school full-time when they're trainees.

I think Yoona's training probably focused more on acting/modeling/public speaking/dancing than singing. She really excels at being speak in public, variety shows, clearly knows her way around the stage, is a good dancer and is a decent enough actress.

Its never said that they were trained in singing for the amount of years SME has them, just that they were trained.

Though, I swear Yoona was a better singer when they started. It almost seems like she lost more and more confidence. She, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung and Yuri would really benefit from more singing lessons. But, Seohyun could probably use some too, Sunny & Jessica needs some stamina building, Taeyeon needs to learn not to just belt 90% of things and Tiffany needs.... a lot of small things? So, its most likely that they are building idols, not singers.

Well, it's not like they train 24/7 anyway. Most go to school. Some are apparently more hardcore into their training than others. Changmin said his dad told him to treat his training like a hagwon he just goes to a few times a week, while Yunho and Jaejoong pretty much lived and breathed training.

Also, I heard that even though trainees are trained in all areas (singing, dancing, acting, hosting, languages, whatever else) trainees get to pick which area to train on the most, so there are some that obviously focused on singing (Taeyeon, Jonghyun, Onew) while others focus on dancing (Yunho, Eunhyuk, Taemin, Hyoyeon). Some chose to act and just not do the idol thing (Yeonhee and Ara).

That aside, they look gorgeous in the picture. Tiffany's shirt thing is so thin that it looks like she's not even wearing anything underneath.
