Date: 2011-06-16 05:23 pm (UTC)I always laugh at people who say SM is shitty because they are so mean to their artists. Why are KangTa and BoA staying with SM if it's such a bad company ? Why didn't HoMin leave then ?
Fans can be so blind. Artists within the company or artists that left the company mostly say good stuff about the staff and all, and please don't tell me they've been brainwashed. The truth is that the ones that left SM just wanted much more money than the company wanted to give them. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I think it's ok to want what you deserve but the whole South Korean music industry is pretty much badly paid in general.
People say nice things about SM all the time, however it's only the negative stuff that people remember. If you want to be in SM, you better be tough. Yeah, they're not going easy on their artists, but still. If you knew the Korean mentality, you'd know that it's a very productive country where working a lot more than you should is a proof of hardwork and pride because you contribute to the nation's rise. It's not SM only, it's the whole industry + how Korea considers work.
Korean workers work like twice as much as Western people. It's the same for singers. It's hard, yet you'll be praised. It's a lot of pressure, that's why the suicide rate is really high in SK. Some people can't handle it and I understand that. I'm not trying to defend SM or anything but I think people are blindly accusing the company without knowing anything much about what's going on in the Koreans' minds.
Nobody ever wondered why SM had never been investigated before all the legal actions when it was pretty clear that their artists where working more than reason ? Seeing idols work like that isn't shocking, it's - most of the time - seen as something normal. And fans are biased by definition ; they want to protect their idols and all, it's fine. But add their Western point of view to their bias and you'll get a huge misunderstanding of SM Entertainment.
