Lee and Obama to Meet on June 16
2009-06-09 05:09 pm
President Lee Myung-bak will head to the United States Monday for a three-day official visit, which includes summit talks with U.S. President Barack Obama.
The presidential office announced Tuesday that during the summit at the White House, the two leaders will examine their joint defense posture in regards to North Korea's recent provocations.
They will discuss efforts toward a complete and verifiable denuclearization of North Korea.
After the summit, Lee and Obama are expected to adopt a "joint vision for the South Korea-U.S. alliance" which will define the direction and principles for future cooperation between the two nations.
The leaders will also put into writing an agreement for "extended deterrence," which entails Washington's provision of a nuclear umbrella and conventional combat assistance to Seoul in case of a contingency on the Korean Peninsula.
The two will also hold detailed discussions of their proposed bilateral free trade agreement.
Other topics of discussion include bilateral cooperation in industrial technologies and low-carbon green growth, and also collaboration on key global concerns such as climate change, the financial crisis and other issues related to the last Group of 20 summit.
Mr. Lee will also meet with U.S. administrative and congressional leaders and will attend a meeting of Korean and U.S. business chiefs.
On the 17th, Lee will receive an honorary doctorate degree from George Washington University. He will then meet with U.S. experts on Korean affairs before returning home on the 18th.
