Sandara Park Gets Interviewed by a Frustrated First Lady

KORINA SANCHEZ: Here is my exclusive report...

She is a product of a reality-based artista* search in the Philippines. From Star Circle Quest, she rose to become a popular young star. She ventured into movies and even had her own album. She is Sandara Park, known in showbiz as "Krung Krung"**. A full-blooded Korean with a Pinoy heart.

But in 2007, Sandara seemed to have disappeared like a bubble. The public did not realize until recently that Sandara has blossomed into a woman. A lady, who used to be a baby in our eyes, is now super famous in Korea.

Last Saturday, The Big Dome rumbled as Araneta Coliseum was filled to the rafters by Dara Park's girl group 2NE1.

DARA: It has been one of my biggest dreams to perform here in Araneta Coliseum.

KORINA: The fans' excitement was beyond explanation; it was as if they were about to lose their sanity. They may not understand the lyrics, yet they continue to sing along. And we were granted an exclusive interview with the Philippines' erstwhile teen idol.

No, no one courted me yet.

I guess I have become more mature. Back then, I was a krung krung, but now I'm a mature krung krung.

* "Artista" is how Filipinos call an idol, but sometimes it's broader in scope, including comedians, TV hosts, TV dancers, radio jocks, entertainment columnists, reality show contestants, starlets, etc.

** "Krung krung" is roughly translated as "a loose screw" (crazy). I think Koreans call it her "3D personality."

*** Apparently, only Korina is not aware that Sandara spent vacation in the Philippines twice, one of which she appeared right in Korina's TV station.

Tagalog is a fun language to learn. One sentence can be constructed in more than one way and you can even mix it with your native language, just like we do here with English.

But the fun part in learning Tagalog is the slangs, like BONGGA!, PAK!, and ECHOS!

Linguists would say Filipino and Tagalog are one and the same, but I disagree. Technically, Filipino is a language based on the Tagalog dialect in Metro Manila.

Anyway, once you get the idea how a Tagalog sentence is constructed, it's easy to understand the mix-up.

uh, a direct translation of artista is actor/actress. we call our idols, idols. it's a different level from being just an actor/actress. i think the term idol has been used by fans in the philippines since the 70s/80s to refer to their favorite actors/actresses the likes of nora aunor et. al. and even back then fanwars were very common. that ends my short history lesson. :op

anyhoo, i doubt korina can ask more in depth questions. i'm surprised yge even allowed (san)dara to be interviewed one one one.

Na-ah. Artista is not just confined to actors and actresses. Like like in one comment here, just a simple mention in a newspaper or an appearance in a billboard makes one become an artista. Actually, even a passing appearance on TV, as victim of a practical joke or a game show contestant, makes an artista.

Meanwhile, "idol" is used differently in the Philippines, as someone who is looked up to.
