After its release on June 1, Girls' Generation's 1st Japanese Album "Girls' Generation" sold 232,000 copies in its first week and reached first place on Oricon's Weekly Album ranking. With this mark, Girls' Generation broke their fellow SM Entertainment labelmate BoA's previous record for first week album sales by a foreign artist, a record which BoA held for approximately 9 years and 3 months.
Since their debut with “GENIE” last September, this is the first time for the group to top the Oricon Weekly Chart when including both singles and full album. SNSD also became the second foreign female group to have their first album at #1, the other first place group is Russian duo t.A.T.u’s “t.A.T.u” (released in March 2003); so it has been 8 years and 3 months since that was last achieved. Additionally, SNSD is the first ever Korean female group to have their debut album at number one
The girls, who are currently in the midst of their first solo concert tour through Japan, commented "We are thankful towards the fans that our album became number 1 on Oricon. Of course the ranking makes us happy, but especially the fact that lots of people listened to our album does also. We hope sincerely from the bottom of our hearts that this album can give the people of Japan even a little bit of courage and the light of hope."
