Animal rights activists tear a mock animal during a rally near the venue for Italian fashion house Fendi's fashion show in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday, June 2, 2011

Fendi's glitz and glamour showed off with a new colorful, young and sporty look in its 2011 fall-winter fashion collection.

It was also notable for its use of fur, although less than what it had originally planned on. Some of the fur was stripped from the show at the insistence of the South Korean government when anti-fur activists had threatened to protest.

But the largest show in Asia that Fendi and the Seoul Metropolitan Government launched Thursday with much ambition still attracted groups of animal rights protesters shouting slogans of anti-fur outside the venue.

"No fur, no Fendi," chanted 80 to 90 protesters who included school children while a woman spread red paint on a sheet of paper with the name Fendi on it.

One banner read "the company of blood, Fendi. The city of blood, Seoul."

World-renowned, Italian fashion house Fendi's fashion show in Seoul comes at a time when Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Korea has become a vital market for European fashion industries.

When animal rights activists threatened two weeks ago to protest, the Seoul government had demanded that Fendi drop fur from the catwalk or risk the show's being canceling altogether.

Fendi at that time had already poured in big bucks to prepare for the show, as well as sent invitations out to worldwide celebrities such as Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi.

For the Seoul government, the Fendi show was a part of a string of celebrating events to promote a new culture center, the Floating Island, built on a man-made island on the Han River.

It weaved in perfectly with Seoul's aspiring image as Asia's center of design.

After behind-the-doors negotiation, Fendi compromised and took some fur out, instead including more items such as bags, shoes and accessories.

The show was on.

"It was about the celebration of this park ... and what Fendi had always in mind was to present a full view of what a fashion house does," Fendi CEO Michael Burke said.

He also said the show was not "a fur fashion show," as some people had called it, but encompassed all kinds of fashion. "Women's wear, men's wear, we had beautiful little children on the runway and, of course, fashion house like Fendi also fashion fur," he added.

Speaking of the fashion line Thursday, Fendi creative director Silvia Fendi said, "It's quite minimal, kind of like a uniform. This girl looks like an art teacher because she's a little bit severe. But then maybe also in the evening she's high collars, long sleeve but in the back there's a big slit."

Fur is not gross. It's beautiful. On the animal. Alive.

Just messing with you bb. I agree that killing animals for "fashion" is horrid. Even though I know it was a totally different scenario, I remember bawling my eyes out as a kid when I went to a native pow-wow & saw bunny bags. Sobbed right there like a baby.

Yeah it depends on the scenario. They probably used the whole animal which isn't as bad.

But who would want to wear this? ;~;

i just ordered rabbit fur gloves! from a local company that sources fur from wild caught. in australia these muckers are a horrible pest, especially to native fauna and i feel justified in supporting their extermination. rabbits are horrid things.

nearly every by product created by fur farms is used in some way, eg pet food, fertilizer. even the meat from wild hunted seals is sold on to make pet food. honestly there's probably less waste in the fur trade than there would be coming from other forms of animal farming. and fur farming is regulated in a lot of countries to control treatment of the animals.

leather's pretty much unnecessary in fashion and has a much higher environmental toll than fur. processing leather creates a lot of pollution and even though a lot of it comes from beef cattle, a fair amount of animals are raised specifically for their hides, especially higher end leathers. i'm sure that a lot of the bags, shoes and accessories they substituted used leather but that's not a popular thing to protest about and doesn't gain many supporters.

i'm not a supporter of fur but it's certainly not the worst thing that humans do to animals and is a pretty minor issue when you look at other things.

lol sorry that got all long and lecturey

In an ideal world leather would be just as unacceptable as fur. Well, one can dream I suppose.

hahahhh random, indeed.
let's be random together:
there is that one story my mum would always tell me and my brothers to prove how delicious sheep brain is. (I don't think she ever convinced me, though.)
my mum has been raised on a farm. whenever they would slaughter one of their sheep her and my uncles and aunt would fight for the brain. and every time my uncles would tell my mum and aunty (the youngest kids in the family.. by far.) that the brain in actuality consists of larvae! and the two would immediately stop eating.

ok so this is not only random this is also disgusting.

hahah I don't have any one in the family interested in sports.
I can't think of any more stories.
hm but this reminds me of how we would just need to mention the words 'star' or 'galaxy' or 'milky way' to our physics teacher and he would rant on about the wonders of the universe until the end of class. meanwhile we could proceed with what we've been doing before he entered the classroom. I think I was the only one who actually listened to him because I thought it was pretty interesting...

... and this is not related in any way. hahh

Actually, I don't know if the deer example works for all parts of the world. Where I am from, the deer are such a huge problem that they encourage hunting--and most people will hunt, kill, and then eat the deer. It's a way to keep the population under control.

This a very polemic theme. But when you kill animals only to make a cool fashion accessory, this doesn't look right for me.

i think its all right to sacrifice sth to make smth beautiful /tasty/ out of it ... all nature suffers /yes plants do as well in thir silent way/ but why single out fur?

thats why we shpuld only use /and aim to/ and eat the best stuff to make all this suffering justified

Part of my family is Native American, so I believe that fur is ok so long as you are not wasting the rest of the animal.

Hunting animals simply for fur or a certain body part disgusts me to no end, especially the killing of elephants and rhinos for their tusks, feet, and horns.

As for the pic, they look like a bunch of cray cray PETA 'tards. >:|

This.

And about the ongs, sometimes they are really insane. But they have his role in the society as the only legitimate way to bring some attention for some themes. Otherwise nobody would ever think about, because the most of us like to be in our comfortable position and don't care about nothing.

the model is so feirce
