TWO young men and two women were found dead in a car on Thursday in an apparent Internet-based group suicide, South Korean police said.

Police said the four, including a 25-year-old woman identified only as Park, left suicide notes in their bags in the car parked next to a river in Seongju, 210km south-east of Seoul.

They apparently inhaled toxic fumes after burning coal briquettes inside the vehicle, which had its windows sealed with plastic tape, police said.

Park's mother in Seoul told investigators that her daughter was reported missing on May 30 after joining a suicide-related website, Yonhap news agency said.

Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people in South Korea, with heavy stress from its highly competitive educational environment and job market taking a lethal toll.

Copycat suicides have increased since an actor killed himself in 2008 by burning coal briquettes in his car.

I think that probably the most of us already thought about suicide once in our lives. But to take this forward is something else. I always have an uncomfortable feeling when I read about real cases and a suicidal virtual meeting is just too weird to understand. People are really lost those days.

my thoughts exactly. and it's not like a program like "it gets better" would help here, because it is SO INGRAINED in the cultural consciousness (honor killings and all that, i think?).

i wish there was some way we could help. :/

It breaks my heart that these people feel pushed to kill themselves. I wish they could find someone to talk to or something to do that could help them channel...their depression? Whatever it is that drives them so far...whether is be depression, stress or both.

oh man, awful :/

You'd think a country like this, with apparently many suicide cases, would do something to prevent. Like try having help more available

It really is scary.

A friend of mine teaches English at High School in Korea, and they recently did psychological tests..... more than HALF of her students are suicide risks. It's scary. Their kids are pushed too much too fast.

Jesus that is depressing to hear about. Recently read something about how job security has decreased in South Korea and therefore the market has become extremely competitive with regards to jobs that are perceived to have more job security. Back in the day, you could expect life-time employment if you got a job. Nowadays not so much. :|
