A terminal cancer patient who was denied a flight home to South Korea has now died, according to KING-5.
Crystal Kim was at the center of a controversy this May after Korean Air refused to allow her on a flight to Seoul, even though she had purchased a ticket and had been cleared by doctors to fly.

Kim had stage-four breast cancer and wanted to spend her final days with family.

Korean Air said they were concerned that Kim would die during the flight and did not want to traumatize other passengers.

Crystal and her daughter, Mimi, booked another flight on Delta Airlines, which allowed her to fly first class for free five days later.

Kim died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday. She was 62.

Doesn't everybody have a chance of dying during a flight?

Mte. It angers me that she and her family had to deal with that when she had so little time left.

Knowing that you're going to die in itself is awful. But not having you're family around you at the time you want them most must be even more terrifying. RIP.

My opinion of Delta increased by 100x after this. Maybe I'll actually fly them next time.

Everyone I know who flies a lot avoids Delta like the black plague.

Delta is one of the worst I've ever flown with, but it's really awesome of them to fly the family over. Rest in peace, Crystal Kim.

It's really sad, but most airlines (delta included) do have policies about flying patients with certain illnesses/health problems though.

yeah, but as far as I know, mostly only the doctors written permission is needed, and then the airport has to be notified. Or in some cases a doctor needs to fly with. In some cases I think they might sign a paper that they know the risks...

never heard of airlines actually denying flight :/// That's such a horrible thing to do, especially if they knew the situation...

Did she get to use delta and fly to see her family? I'm confused it said her daughter booked the flight but did she make it in time?

After Korean airlines prevented them from flying on one of their planes, the daughter quickly booked a new ticket on a different company. I'm guessing after they learned about the incident, Delta gave her a free upgrade to first class. So she died surrounded by her family in Korea, just as she had wished.

My mother died of cancer late last year and in her dying months the amount of medications she had to take and her condition was severely deteriorated. I can't imagine her flying any time in the last 6 months of her life.

I can understand Korea Air's stance, but I also feel like they could have flown her over sooner.

In the end, at least she is at peace.

Her condition really isn't any business of the airline if the doctor says she can handle it. Especially considering their reasoning was because they were afraid she would die on the plane. There are worse conditions to fly in than final stages of cancer, for the person and the passengers around them. I have seen people who aren't even strong enough to get out of a wheelchair, have oxygen masks, are in drug and illness induced vegetative states, have broken backs... all these people were allowed to fly quite simply.

R.I.P Crystal Kim

This reminds me of the lady that died during flight and her body was moved to first-class, pissing off the guy her body was placed next to. He later on sued the airplane company

legally? sure, why not. it's the same as a business refusing to serve someone. there's probably fine print somewhere saying "we reserve the right to make any decisions and refuse to allow you to board the plane" sort of thing. bad press, though. very bad.
