The days of lip-syncing and hand-syncing may finally be coming to an end, as it was recently revealed that a bill for banning the two acts was presented to the Korean government.

To clarify the bill proposed by the Liberty Forward Party., lip-syncing and hand-syncing are acts of mimicry, in which the artist pretends to be singing or playing an instrument.

On May 13th, Senator Lee Myung Soo of the Forward Liberty Party reportedly submitted a Public Performance Act, which proposed that artists should not be allowed to lip-sync or hand-sync during commercial performances or broadcasts where the artists are given performance wages.

In cases where lip-syncing and hand-syncing are unavoidable, it must be announced to the spectators beforehand that such acts will take place during their performance. Breaking this law should result in at least a year of jail time or a fine of at least $10,000 USD for negligence.

Senator Lee stated, “In the past, viewers were able to watch a whole variety of different genres for performances including ballad, dance, and trot. These days, it’s only dancing idol groups who are given the main focus. Due to the concentration of this particular genre, singers are trained more in their visuals rather than their singing ability.”

He continued, “For example, at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, a cute little girl with physically appealing facial features became a hot topic for singing the opening anthem, but it was later discovered that there was actually another girl of the same age singing for her behind-the-scenes. Ever since this global embarrassment, China has been working on legislating a law for the prohibition of lip-syncing. Even in our country, many people buy expensive tickets to watch artists sing or play live, but artists who lip-sync or hand-sync make spectators lose trust, and also obstrucst the development of our music industry. We submitted this bill as a way to solve these kinds of problems.”

The bill has already drawn strongly divided views, as one netizen expressed, “It doesn’t make sense that singers can take thousands of dollars just for lip-syncing at an event,” while another netizen voiced out, “There are times when singers need to perform intense choreography, and it’s the idol dances that are the core of the Hallyu Wave, so trying to prohibit this by law doesn’t make sense.”

I would prefer it if some groups would lipsync instead of sing js.

I suppose the good news is that all this "my idol oppas are in a real band the music stations just don't have equipment!!" bullshit will end. ^^

I guess it's when the artists are holding mics but still lip-synching? Nice little psychological trick to play on the audience, I guess.

I would love if more idols practiced on live singing, but honestly, the sound work on some of these music shows and Gayos are literally painful to listen to. Upgrade that shit, folks. And God knows I start sweating every time Heechul opens his mouth on a Suju live day. Is this gonna be the day he starts giving a fuck about the lyrics? I wonder. Yeah... no.

And it's just a bit crazy to make lip-syncing illegal altogether. Say what?

MTE. I don't like lipsyncing, but those governmental officals should get their priorities straight. It seems they are purposely drawing public attention away from bigger issues in the industry.

Hand synch performances just look silly. idk about an outright ban, but it'd be nice if more popular programs and artists stopped relying on stuff like that so heavily.

Probably not, it just says you have to note that lipsync or handsyncing will be going on. So more like a disclaimer before shows and on with the handsyncing!

I sure that even if they have to sing live while they can't sing at all, they will still be populair. talent=overrated in kpop.

Example: I saw quite a lot of people (not on omana) that said that the most talentless member of 5Dolls should have more lines :0

Even though I agree with banning lip-syncing (Korean TV is public TV after all, so lip-synchin basically would mean they are using people's taxes to pay for singers who won't sing) a penalty of a year of jail time or $10,000USD it's a bit too much... Also, who will pay? The singers, the companies or the PD of the music programs?

That being said, being a JYJ fan this law doesn't worry me one little bit LOL (although the hottest in me is running around in circles in desperation xD)

It kind of makes sense though what she's saying, because the quality of idols and singers has decreased. Now they they have to dance and pretend to sing live. No wonder there are so many singers, it's so easy now, you just have to sing while recording the song, they auto-tune it, and besides learning the dance, that's it.

I do agree with others, there are more important things to be focusing on :D

MTE. It's like wtf? What does the Government have to do with it? I HATE it when government decided to involve itself in irrelvant matters but won't step up for things, that actually fucking matter.

Idols are idols. They aren't just meant to sing, they do 101 other things and live on planes, diets etc, there is a reason they are usually lip-syncing, they don't have the energy to sing live. If they want to fix the music industry why not start, with child work protection laws, so that 12 year old aren't singing 15 year long contracts, that they don't understand, or try fixing the ridicules body standards that female singers are pressured into keeping?

FML.
