Lee Seunggi's oustanding command of Japanese, as well as the extent of his advance into Japan, has come into the spotlight. He showed off his proficiency of the language on a episode of Fuji TV's "Hoko Tate" on May 10th. The MC and guests present were surprised, commenting, " His ability is incredible."

"Hoko Tate," in Japanese, means "spear and shield." It is an entertainment program whose premise consists of the guests being split into two teams who then, based on their logic, justify a winner out of two objects pitted against each other -- ergo the "spear" and the "shield." This naturally means that filming is difficult for someone who is less than good at the language.

Lee Seunggi, on that day, was given the situation of "an umbrella against the wind". He surprised with his ability to argue, "I think an umbrella will win. Because it's malleable, the wind is able to make it strong."

After the episode was broadcasted, viewers commented, "I was surprised at his sudden appearance", and "He is even good at Japanese; a Hallyu star indeed."

Lee Seunggi is also going to make a surprise appearance on the May 16th episode of Fuji TV's "Suma Suma."

Lee Seunggi's popularity is currently on the rise because of his roles in "Brilliant Legacy" and "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho," and is touted as the new rising Hallyu star.

Check out the clip of his appearance on the show.

I wish someone had just told me that he only said one line in Japanese at the end so I wouldn't have wasted my time. That's not proficiency.

This show looks odd though and I'd like to know what's up with that one foreign talento. The set looks like its Christmas 24/7.

Understanding Japanese does not make you proficient if you can't speak Japanese.

He's actually been studying a lot for a long, long time so... let's not make any judgments on his proficiency based on one clip. I don't agree with the title either so /:
