Brazilian fans gather to bring kpop tour to Brazil

SM Entertainment, one of the biggest entertainment companies in South Korea, announced this week plans of bringing its world tour – SMTown World Tour – to Latin America. The news quickly spread among fans through social networks and even made it to Twitter's Trending Topics as one of the most discussed topics among Brazilians.

The Korean pop culture, or Kpop, is gaining more popularity in Brazil. Korean artists are often featured in magazines and websites, and are also being discussed in TV shows such as Leitura Dinâmica (Rede TV) and on MTV.

A survey conducted by the Korean Association of São Paulo in 2010 established that SM Entertainment artists are the most popular among Brazilian teens. With approximately 2500 votes, artists like Super Junior, Girls' Generation, SHINee and BoA filled 4 of the top 5 positions disclosed by the survey.

According to the South Korean press, SM Entertainment is planning to bring the tour to Brazil and Chile. As dates and venues are yet to be confirmed, fans from other countries are now gathering so they can also be part of the SMTown tour.

In Brazil, in addition to the tag #smtownbrazil on Twitter, fans also created a Facebook Page. The main intention is to show that Brazil has enough audience for a concert. This is the first time Brazil gets a chance to be inserted in the “world map” of South Korean artists, since in the last few years only the Unites States has received big kpop concerts.

In the mean time, fans who are trying to get some attention from SM Entertainment, its artists and the South Korean press can gather in the 6º Korean Cultural Festival, on May 21th and 22th, in the traditional korean neighborhood Bom Retiro, in São Paulo. One of the main attractions is the Brazilian DJ Carlos Brandão, DJ Masa, who achieved international fame with his mashups. Masa is a fan of BoA and a lot of fans even dream about him being the opening attraction for the SMTown Concert in Brazil.

It may not be confirmed by SME itself yet, but this is the closest we've ever gotten to this actually becoming a reality, and the same way SMTown Paris seemed random but ended up being true, I have high hopes for Brazil to get a SMTown concert. :)

Even though I'm a proud Canadian and all (OUR NDP MPS ARE BETTER THAN YOURS etc), I am actually REALLY happy for Brazil. Brazil is one of my favourite countries (see icon for more details), so if these means I can see dozens of hot Brazilian and/or Spanish-speaking men in fancams and expand my love for the men in that country, then by all means :D

I'm amazed at how butthurt people get when European/South-American Kpop fans decide to 'protest' to get more attention from SME or other companies. Why do people assume that doing a protest for Kpop, means these same fans don't protest for other things of greater value and why would they? Is there a womens protest or a gay rights protests going on right now? No.

You'd see me at a Kpop protest(if the UK, ever had one)and I'm on countless protests for with my uni (who is famous for protesting at pretty much anything and everything). People really need to stop making assumptions of fans that they don't even know, really, there is nothing wrong with fans trying to make themselves heard.

The amount of Kpop fans I run into IN TEXAS, is crazy.

I innocently had my MGIAG drumstick on my car window (it's like 2 pounds and I hate when it falls on my head, so I thought I'd put it up where the baby I was watching could play with it).

I walked back to my car after a quick stop at Borders and there were 5 girls looking into my windows.

2 black, 1 mexican and 1 white.

And they weren't Koreaboo's!
