Yesterday, we reported that Lee Ji Ah withdrew her lawsuit against Seo Taiji after he came out with a statement addressing their divorce. Turns out, the two had actually come together prior to the announcement for a settlement of $1 million USD + α.

On May 1st, a representative that is well-acquainted with this lawsuit revealed that Lee Ji Ah and Seo Taiji’s lawyers met several times to discuss a settlement in hopes of preventing the lawsuit issue from getting out of hand with the public.

He stated, “Seo Taiji’s lawyers offered $1 to $2 million USD, but Lee Ji Ah’s lawyers asked for $2 million USD. Both sides settled on an agreement of $1 million USD + α.”

Through Star Today, representatives of Seo Taiji commented, “Rumors of a settlement being reached are unfounded. We did not even know that Lee Ji Ah had withdrew her lawsuit beforehand. We do not want anymore rumors being made by third party sources.”

Seo Taiji’s marriage was uncovered 15 years ago by Sports Seoul?
Korea still hasn’t recovered from the shock surrounding the secret marriage of music legend Seo Taiji and actress Lee Ji Ah. While the fans of those stars are rolled up in blankets grieving, the more curious breed of netizens started digging through the vast world wide web… and found quite a story: A Sports Seoul news article from November 20th, 1996. The headline? Seo Taiji is getting married (to a Korean American student on December 24th).

Remember, this is from 1996, which was 15 years ago. Around that time in late 1996, it was not long after Seo Taiji announced that his legendary band (Seo Taiji & Boys) would be breaking up and he would be going into retirement. So how did Sports Seoul strike the gold, dig it out, and show the world… just to ultimately find out that nobody believes their story?

The path that they took went like this; the chief editor of Sports Seoul at the time was Mr. Lee Ki Jong. He received a phone call from a Korean in America telling him that they see Seo Taiji frequently in disguise hanging out with a girl who appears to be his wife.

So he started digging deeper, until he got in contact with one of Lee Ji Ah’s relatives, who told this individual that the couple is getting married and only relatives from Lee’s father’s side are invited. The relative described Lee as a fine young lady who is smart, beautiful, and talented.

Mr. Lee sensed that this was something big. How big? Look at the picture of the article. The main article with Seo’s face in it, it’s huge. Even the letters are huge with headline color scheme being red and yellow. That is the kind of colors the press usually uses to describe emergency, like code red. That headline means business, still not convinced? The little, tiny, overlooked article to the right with a girl’s face slapped on it is about Shin Eun Kyung, one of the top actresses at the time, getting arrested from a multi-hit-and-run while drunk without a driver’s license. That is breaking many crimes at once, and would have made a major headline story if Seo Taiji article wasn’t there.

The point is, Sports Seoul thought they hit the jackpot.

Seo Taiji, however, didn’t like the article one bit. He and his management company called it defamation and showed their outrage at Sports Seoul. And Seo Taiji is not just some ordinary musician; he is the legend whom many consider the godfather of Kpop. He’s still big now, but he was much, much bigger back then (like Michael Jordan in his prime). Did Sports Seoul want to mess with the number one star in the industry, his company, and the lawyers in their pockets all at the same time?

Apparently not, the flashy headline was taken down. Its glorious rein of red and yellow lasted a mere few hours. People probably talked about it for a few days after that, maybe even a week or two, but eventually everyone forgot that it ever existed.

Until now.

And another thing "Some netizens are arguing that the timing is a bit fishy; the story of the shocking divorce was released only an hour after news claiming that current Korean president Lee Myung Bak had involvement in stock market manipulation, subsequently drawing the media’s attention away from allegations against the president. This has lead some netizens to think that the government released the news on Seo and Lee in order to protect the president from the Korean public’s interest in the allegations"

actually it was better for jiyeon that they swept it under the rug, i mean imagine all the photos and scenes from the tape in the media everyday.. would have been horrible for her.
but on the other hand i dont think they should act like nothings happened.. at least the guy who recorded and/or leaked it should go to jail.

but thats kinda OT right now lol

I think the media stopped talking about it because she was underaged and they could be fined.

Well like I said, I'm not 100% sure that's the reason but I believe it's something along those lines. It was more waaay more than just "talking" about child porn though!

Agree, with this so much and I personally believe it. It happen all the time, everywhere. I personally believe that the netziens have hit the nail on the head. I believe this observation even more so after the 'mysterious' lack of interest, that the media seemed to hold, on the case of the young girl from BOF who killed herself and left the names of some very powerful people behind her.

It's amazing how one moment everyone was on it, the next, everybody seems to be convinced that it is all false. Media + Government go hand in hand, take one look at western countries and Murdoch. It's all a sham tbqh and a often a disappointed.

media is corrupted with every big ass out there, as long as there is money, as long as they have the power to manipulate public's opinion
I'm convinced of that since 2009.

Perhaps not for all cases, but for a lot of these 'mass media used as distraction' cases I believe there is definitely something fishy. News is just tailored to fit a specific mold and whoever holds the money and holds the power owns and is able to manipulate it to their liking. I completely agree that media in Western countries is dominated by the Murdoch family and suited to whatever their political agenda is. Half the stuff wouldn't even MAKE the news if they didn't want it out there for some reason - to stir public resentment, fire up debates, sway opinion, as propaganda etc. And don't get me started on government.

With opinion blogging and internet freesharing, however, media is starting to change, but unwanted news is still not something that can't be erased with some money and connections. I've looked back at a lot of big 'scandals' in the entertainment or media and most of the larger bombshells do happen around times where there are either big business deals or government problems happening. Of course there are cases which are their own agenda, but again, large media coporations chooses the time they get to broadcast it and it's only then the story gains credibility.

I agree with everything you're saying.
The media will always be biased and I believe there's always some sort of hidden agenda. The media is so powerful and influences us so strongly, that they can cause nations to rise up against even the most innocent of people if they wanted.

Whenever I try to say this to my friends though, they say I'm too into 'conspiracy theories'. It's not a conspiracy if it's true right?

I wish people would stop underestimating the power of media manipulation. Most governments have more power over media than you think, and many have agreements with the larger conglomerate companies. In Korea, you only really need CJ entertainment onboard and you just about rule what makes hot news and what doesn't. It may sound stupid but it is a very real option and also a very good distraction.

its true, especially with the government being obviously tied with kbs, i think it's pretty obvious that the govt has a lot of control over the media, if not at least working with it.

haha im not judging the media manipulation bit at all, more like amused cos it sounds like seo taiji is more relevant than the president to the people; after all this isn't just about a minister but the president..?
and not even underestimating it, especially growing up in a country like singapore where mass media is pretty much owned by the govt.

From: [identity profile] x3sarang.livejournal.com
The president's stock market manipulation would be a huge issue if there was no news "bigger" to dampen the shock effect of it, and Seo Taiji is a very very well known musician, and naturally stories about him would capture the public's interest. I think this story was just a temporary distraction to calm the media panic while the gov't or the president tries to think his way out of this. Of course, the problem will have to be dealt with but at least it's buying them time. As some elitists will say, politics requires thinking while gossip doesn't, so easier for people to latch onto it and make a big fuss about.

Oh yeah, we had to study Lee Kwan Yew for one of our media exercises. It's rather scary how a 'democratic' nation can be so easily silenced and manipulated.

No, actually, it is a huge 'conspiracy' going on with the media right now. Read Korean news sites :)

Right when this happened, my boyfriend noticed about the president thing and he told me. I was surprised it had not been mentioned by American K-pop sites.

Okay, maybe I'm just stupid, but WHY do people sue for money when they're getting a divorce? Especially when both parties already have plenty of money on their own? I mean, why make something that is already difficult emotionally, also difficult financially? Not to mention if that former couple happened to have kids. I find it horribly selfish when people make a divorce such a big deal (for the wrong reasons I mean), and end up hurting their children possibly even more so than themselves.

I can understand having trouble splitting up a house, or belongings, but honestly, mature adults should be able to civilly negotiate those kinds of things.

Sorry, I just can't wrap my mind around it. I was trying to make up reasons for myself just now. If anyone can explain to me, I'd actually be appreciative. I have friends who are against divorce ("then they shouldn't have gotten married in the first place!") but their reasoning is a little loop-holey, so I can't really get a proper discussion about this out of them.

From: [identity profile] fibfables.livejournal.com
ideally, you should be able to negotiate these sort of things civilly, but when your relationship breaks down, it's hard enough to be civil to the other person, let alone be able to be a rational person and negotiate with them. there're also various reasons why people would want get involved in a law suit even when they're well off. some do it for vindication of their legal rights. also, ownership in property/ assets can be pretty controversial and some people end up in court to settle these issues as conclusively as they can. just some of the more common reasons I suppose..
