Those who have been listening to Korean pop music for a long time have probably heard about the group Royal Pirates. This California-based rock band rose to Internet fame with their covers of popular Korean pop songs in 2008. After a long wait, it seems that they will be debuting in Korea after all.
They initially started as Fading from Dawn in 2004, but changed names when one of its band members, brother to vocalist Moonchul, died in an accident. As the other members felt they couldn't keep the same name without him in the band, Fading from Dawn became Royal Pirates.
Right after their name change they started recording their "Youtube famous" covers of songs like Super Junior's "Sorry Sorry", Wonder Girls' "Nobody", and TVXQ's "Mirotic". Apart from the K-Pop songs they also released their own version of Britney Spears' "Circus" and "Time is Running Out", a song from Muse, the band they claim has had a lot of influence on them.
It didn't take long for them to get noticed by K-Pop fans and the music industry, as they got love calls from Korea, asking them to appear on different shows. The popular show "Star King" was one of them. But as the boys didn't want to be labeled as just a K-Pop cover band, they declined the offers, and went on to work on their own music.
This resulted in the release of "Disappear", a song that they released independently with its own music video as well. The EP they promised to release never came as it seemed that the boys did answer one of the calls, and left for Korea not that long after.
A Tumblr account dedicated to the band revealed today that they are recording demo versions for songs at the moment, but aren't planning on recording an official album yet. They did say they'll be debuting in Korea, but they don't know when they'll be able to do so yet. Royal Pirates also revealed that they, most likely, will not be appearing on music shows like M! Countdown, Inkigayo, or any other show that doesn't support live instruments, as they don't want to handsync.
