i feel like modern pop music isn't as influenced by the beatles or elvis as it is by mj. even in the west artists will state MJ as an influence/ role model more than elvis or the beatles.
the world's beatles obsession is just old white ppl nostalgic for their youth and their children they pushed it onto. and idk ppl who yearn for those simpler, sexist times in the 60's
meanwhile the 80's is right about when korea finally started joining the rest of the first world and really recovering from the war/japanese occupation/being poor as fuq to the extent of being able to look around at pop culture and music and other not-necessary-to-life thangs, and that was mj's prime
the beatles were all about equal rights for both sexes and all races. a lot of these "old white people" were forward-thinking teenagers in the '60s. idk if your parents tried to push the beatles onto you, but they happen to be one of my favorite bands, and my mom does not listen to them.
the beatles yes, but they had a broad appeal across all classes in america, and the people most nostalgic for those times are old white dudes in advertising. they love them some beatles songs! and a nostalgic rose-colored memory of their youth that is more 'grease' than youth protest rallies. i know the 60's were groundbreaking times but they were still pretty awful sexist n racist etc imo. i wasn't there to witness it or nut'n but i'm js.
and my parents r severe catholics who don't believe in pop muzik. or idk all i know is my father is fond of tom jones, who was apparently super popular on the radio back in the day in korea!
i'm not tryna offend, i just think mj >>>> the beatles (who are always v. overrated) in terms of changing the face of music.
I think we're just gonna have to agree to disagree here. I think most of the artists who cite MJ as an influence, cite him as a black man who stepped into a largely white game. He didn't introduce a huge change in music, but a change in who gets to participate in it. On the other hand, the Beatles blurred genres and created new sounds. Though most of the artists in the top 40 wouldn't cite the Beatles as an influence, they have been influenced through a chain or trickle-down effect. Just like Robert Leroy Johnson inevitably had an influence on hip hop today.
Haha, Elvis. MJ was/is the king of pop and influenced a whole spectrum of people. The Beatles and Elvis were more geared towards white people at the time not to mention that during the late 70's-90's, globalisation was taking stride.
this looks interesting! i'm looking forward to what they have to say since idols don't talk about actual music (as in production and composing) that much, lol
my ex was so obsessed with "we are the world". early on he showed me the video on his ipod and would be like "this is the best song ever written. it changed ma life when i first saw it when i was 5" etc
people born in 80's r so weird. or maybe it's an azn thing i dunno!!
TBH, I'm actually more interested in the M Story about Quincy Jones now than about how flawless YG Family and Tiger JK + Tasha looked here. /gets bricked
