Check out the trailer for Wayne Wang’s latest film, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan!

The director, who worked on 1993’s The Joy Luck Club, brings Lisa See’s bestselling novel of the same name to the big screen.

Synopsis: In 19th-century China, 7-year-old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong - or “old sames” - bound together for eternity. Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan. In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong’s descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai. The two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection, hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan, or risk losing one another forever.

The drama, which stars Hugh Jackman, Bingbing Li, Gianna Jun, and Vivian Wu, hits theaters July 15!

WILL YOU WATCH Snow Flower and the Secret Fan?

I hated his adaptation of The Joy Luck Club. It was too disjointed and I felt it didn't convey a lot of the things the book was trying to say. So probably not going to see this.

of course it will, unfortunately. it's bad enough that jeon jihyun has to play a chinese girl (i'm assuming they'll dub in the voice? idk if she speaks any chinese). though i am glad that she has a hollywood role that will be noticed, this time.

wayne wang is usually for the asian crowd though so he might make it more true to it's original story? maybe.

Hugh Jackman?

Where does he fit in this movie exactly? Or is he just one of the actors thrown in so that it'd receive a bigger audience...?

i have yet to read the book (it's on my shelf at home) but the movie looks like it'll be good. i'm torn between being glad that jeon jihyun has a noticeable Hollywood movie role and being disappointed that hollywood still cannot cast people of correct race. racebending is just so annoying/disrespectful/etc, but i guess that's a story for another day. having said that though, i'll definitely watch the movie just for jihyun, though the story looks good too

CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS!! Honestly, I never finished the book because it started getting too boring for me, but the movie looks really, really good (even though I still wish Zhang Ziyi was a part of it, ilh so much). I'll try to convince my mom to see it with me.

You know, I used to get really annoyed when a Chinese actor was cast as a Japanese character, or a Japanese actor as a Korean character, etc.

Then I realised that it isn't that different from an American playing playing a French character, or vice-versa. Hell, it's not even that far from an English actor playing an American. I think, instead of people complaining about an Asian role being cast with someone from a different Asian country to that of the character should just be thankful that there is an Asian role out there!

Also, I don't really see how Hugh Jackman fits into all this...?
