Hyun Bin, with his memorable voice, provided the narration for the documentary “Tears of Africa.”

“Tears of Africa” is the third installment of MBC‘s documentary series, “Tears of the World.” For the TV format and also for the theater (film) format of the documentary, the “Secret Garden” actor’s voice will be heard as the main narration.

Hyun Bin said in an interview, “Honestly, I thought that Africa was only a paradise with green plains and animals romping around Mother Earth,” frankly revealing his biased view he once had of Africa. “But I learned a lot through this narration,” he explained, “There are rising natural misfortunes, ethnic conflicts, amongst others, telling a story of shock and powerful emotion beyond imagination. It would be great if the audience while watching in the theater can learn of the problems Africa faces.”

The narration has even inspired the actor to want to go to Africa. In line with his brave decision to join the Marines, Hyun Bin revealed of one African culture, “There was a festival where they choose the most valiant men. I want to participate in that festival.”

“Tears of Africa” opens March 24th in Korea.

I hope a lot people watch "Tears of Africa"
There are many problems in the world that you might not know of.
I knew I discovered many by watching "Planet in Peril" even if it mainly focused on environment ^^

I really love it when, artist/celebs (from anywhere in the world) show themselves to be cultures and educated.

'Hyun Bin said in an interview, “Honestly, I thought that Africa was only a paradise with green plains and animals romping around Mother Earth,” frankly revealing his biased view he once had of Africa.'

And he isn't the only one, everywhere around the world, people tend to see of Africa only what the media feeds them, in Korea, it seems that Africa is presented as a paradise and in the west, Africa, is a war torn country, where no happiness occurs, both views hold some truth but also hide away the fact, that many great an inspiring stories happen there.

It just makes me happy, when people admit, that they hadn't fully understood a certain culture and thereafter try to educate people.

I agree. It's almost sad how generalized Africa is. "The home of lions and poor hungry people."

For such a large continent it's sad that people generalise it so much, there's so much diversity in Africa. Hopefully the documentary will show some of that. I'm sure more people will be interested because of Hyun Bin (I know I would hehe) so it will be a chance for them to learn more :o)

Happy that his eyes were open, and I hope that he can open the eyes of others as well.

That's really lovely that Hyun Bin admitted his own ignorance, that's pretty brave and honest of him. It's also a smart move to nab Hyun Bin, because there will be gaggles of fans that will follow anything he does. I haven't heard of Tears of Africa, but that is a definite to-watch list.

Africa is such a continent, you can't really generalise it. I don't think it's only in South Korea that people aren't really aware of how countries are like in Africa, I think the rest of the world generalises too. Which is really sad of course..

Oh great, another piece of media that generalizes (I hate when people just say "Africa" it's an entire continent ffs) such a diverse place and depicts it as weepy, hopeless, etc. I think it's great that international problems are being exposed to Korea, but what kind of issues will the special address? It's impossible to just lump all of Africa's problems together.

I didn't know Koreans tended to view Africa as a beautiful paradise. How different from America, where the average person thinks it's just one big desert with a bunch of starving black people on it.

People here in Korea don't realise that Africa's not a country, mostly because there's a South Africa, and they simply think that there must be a country called Africa for there to be one called "south."

But you're right, there's a big risk for generalization, especially depending on which topics they choose to speak about.

Eh, Korea is still a really closed society that's just starting to get more and more educated on the world and it's issues, not just the ones that matter to Korea as a country. I'm glad they've been making these documentaries to help educate people, because there are so many who haven't had the chance to learn about what's going on around the world.

I'd have like to have seen this in English or with English subtitles, but I'll struggle through understanding the Korean for that voice.
