The five-piece Korean boy group, Big Bang, have shocked music industry experts by landing a top 10 album on US iTunes.

Korean pop – or K-Pop as it’s now commonly referred to – has become one of the hottest genres in music with articles about the growing phenomenon appearing in Billboard magazine and MTV online.

This has led to a number of K-Pop acts trying their luck in America – from Wonder Girls to BoA – but so far with little success.

That is until the release of Big Bang’s latest mini-album Tonight.

It becomes the first K-Pop album to reach the top 10 on US iTunes and is the only non-English language album in the top 100.

If the genre’s popularity keeps growing at this rate, it’s only a matter of time until the K-Pop wave reaches Australia.

lol , I love how this doesn't mention k-pop in Australia till the last line,
and even then , we're not sure whether the k-pop wave will reach there.

Tonight was number 9 in the Australian iTunes Pop Chart last night (it's now 12).

I know that if enough people request it Sanity would try to stock physical copies or try to get them if it was possible.

BoA was a flop in the States for various reasons....mainly lack of promotion working to gain fans outside of Kpop.

Wonder Girls are at least working hard on the foundation and didn't give up when they weren't the best new thing since Britney/Gaga/Beyonce/etc....cause that won't ever happen

Aussie Aussie Aussie....Oi Oi Oi!
Don't think kpop would go very far here....unless you're Taeyang xD
But honestly, Taeyang's Wedding Dress got quite big in my school within in the Asian community, some who didn't even know what kpop was but they were humming along to WD lol

So, the only kpop group to find any decent amount of success and recognition in America is a group that's not even promoting here?

It is pretty impressive that they made it to the top 10 on itunes (I almost had a fit when I saw them on the main page)...but this article is cracking me up. But hey, they're promoting Big Bang so thumbs up starobserver!

I'm glad for australian fans because their country tend to be ignored though it's not thaaaat far (i mean if you go to the philippines you can go a bit farer).
Fans from all over the world try to make up stuff to show they're here and it's all good.

And actually from what i note yg artists have a huge non-asian fanbase...

"what is right" is the shittest thing i've ever heard from big bang tbh, but i quite like the new songs (tonight and cafe) so maybe that makes up for it. really just a single with a B-side!!

i get that they want to play it safe in the actual group for widespread appeal, do the project albums for creativity n shit, and this way they can stick together. w/e i am fine with it give me a soul-shaking luther vandross daesung album ok etc

LOL because the hallyu wave really travels via the Pacific Ocean.
By this logic, by the time the wave reaches here, it'll only be strong enough to knock a kid off his boogie board at Bondi. D: So I guess it's gotta be a pretty huge-ass wave to do anything.

But we totally have SBS PopAsia! K-Pop on the radio is awesome, even if I do have iTunes and an iPod.

I don't get impressed when they do well on iTunes because it's just people who are already fans buying it.

There's no reason to come to the US when all your fans can buy it online, unless you're trying to legitimately make it here, which I can't see happening for anyone in kpop right now.

Date: 2011-02-26 10:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] naturalhonee.livejournal.com
but isn't that how it starts for most artists? those who are already fans buy the music. if they manage to create a huge buzz (and in this case, the fans put bigbang at #6 on the overall charts), others will notice.

and those who notice might just get curious and search for the artist's music. all of these people are your potential new fans.

I think thatit would take ages or a total change in buying demographic in Australia to make kpop popular in Australia.

Um yeah - check the source dudes. The source is Australian. Hence, the last line - "It's only a matter of time til it hits Australia." Common syntax, paragraph comprehension jfc

And another thing - the Star Observer is a popular LGBT magazine in Sydney, Australia. Trolololol ;D
