On February 19th, the members of B2ST guested on KBS 2TV’s “Entertainment Relay“, and were interviewed about both their pre-debut and post-debut experiences.
When asked by the reporter on how they came up with their name, Yoseob replied, “Before our debut, a foreign dance instructor came to visit and saw us dance. At the time, he exclaimed, ‘So~ Beast!’ The meaning of the word means that it’s ‘cool’ or ‘amazing.’”
“Do you remember October 16th, 2009?” the reporter asked. Junhyung said, “Yes, we were all very nervous. We had rehearsed so much that our conditions weren’t the best. Yoseob was really upset about going off key a tiny bit, but to our ears, we couldn’t tell.”
Yoseob added, “Yes, I cried a lot…”
Kikwang continued, “To me, it was an opportunity for me to do better.”
The members are also known for their rich experiences prior to forming B2ST; Doojoon was with JYP Entertainment’s “Hot Blood“, Junhyung was part of boy band XING, Kikwang had a solo career as AJ, and Hyunseung was with Big Bang.
Unfortunately, their old nickname – ‘recycled group’ – surfaced during the interview. Doojoon reflected, “I was really mad, but… It’s the truth, what can I say? To me, the word ‘recycle’ didn’t make me feel that bad.”
Dongwoon continued, “Because either way, we were recycled and are now B2ST.. but we were most worried about our fans being hurt by it.
A year later, they overcame all obstacles and took home their first music program win. They exclaimed, “We cried a lot, more than you could imagine. There was a nice weight to the trophy..”
When asked to pick a member who ‘improved’ the most looks-wise, Kikwang chose himself and explained, “I used to live in Yongsanpo… but living in Seoul now, I really do think I’ve improved in my looks.”

Date: 2011-02-21 07:15 am (UTC)The recycled issue keeps coming up because it's a talking point for the reporters. It's not their fault if the press keeps wanting to bring it up. And I actually don't think that talking about them being the "recycled group" is necessarily a bad thing anyway because it makes them more relatable to the public. It hits on something that we can all relate to - failure. We all fail, but seeing idols fail and then succeed...now that's new. If these guys weren't actually talented though, no one would give a fuck about them. Seeing legitimately talented people achieve success after failure is something out of the ordinary and that's why being called the "recycled group" is actually a badge of honor in my book. If anything, their story is an inspirational one, but the haters will keep on hating no matter what, so I'll save my breath.

it's what makes them so attractive, and the reporters hit on it a) because the media thrives on the pity factor, we love seeing our idols "work hard" and "give their all" and love to coddle them when they're so exhausted they pass out and b) because it's something that makes them different from idols like super junior or dbsk--it's amazing that they're so popular, given that they'd already debuted and failed and hadn't had the easy track to success that many other idols, like GD for example, who are trained practically from birth and are handheld through the entire process. when hyunseung had to practice on his own or choose to leave in BB documentary, it was admirable that he kept staying to work, even if his chances were only 50/50, even if he didn't have any hope.
the kpop experience is only partly about the music. half of it is the human factor--the closeness we feel with our idols. we feel close to beast because they feel human. and the interviewers are clever enough to play on that.
but the hateraid will continue to flow, so w/e.
