An anti-Bae Yong-joon sign in Japan

Korean girl groups use sexual favors to get their way and the Korean government has invested over 1 trillion yen ($11.9 billion) to support the Korean Wave, at least according to one Japanese comic.

The comic is not based on fact, but is a microcosm of the backlash against the Korean Wave, or hallyu, which has recently been led by Korean girl groups Girls’ Generation and Kara.

Since the Korean Wave began sweeping across Asia, anti-Korean Wave sentiment has emerged in different countries over the years.

In Japan, a couple of so-called “anti-Korean wave” comics portray girl groups as hostesses and have sold thousands of copies.

In Taiwan, nude composite photos of a member of Super Junior can be found on many Taiwanese Web sites. One Chinese media outlet posted an article with a title implying that a member of Girls’ Generation appeared in pornography.

Song Won-seop, director of JoongAng Entertainment and Sports, says the reason behind the backlash is Korean disinterest in foreign media.

“Korean industries are passionate about selling their content, but tend to refuse foreign content,” Song said. “This provokes a sense of discontent in other countries.”

“In particular, Chinese people feel that the Koreans under appreciate Chinese culture,” Song added. “Similarly, some Japanese are upset at hallyu because Korean culture used to follow Japanese trends.”

For some countries, it’s a combination of politics and psychology.

“In Taiwan’s case, people have antipathy toward Korea based on history. Korea was a political and economic ally of Taiwan, but changed its alliance to China. Taiwan feels Korea betrayed them,” Song said.

Japanese anti-Korean Wave sentiment has political roots, Song said.

“Many conservatives in Japan feel that Korea is still an underdeveloped country that used to be their colony. From their point of view, Korea is politically and economically challenging Japan.”

Some suggest anti-Japanese sentiment in Korea has also inflamed a backlash against the Korean Wave.

Though the causes are complex, Song suggests a way to ease tensions: “The best way to cope is to try to seriously consider how foreigners view Korea and be interested in their culture as well.”

I'm not anti Hallyu, but it does get a bit boring having certain people acting as though it's the best thing since sliced bread sometimes. Pop music and romance/historical dramas don't make any kind of epic cultural wave imho.

P.S. Sorry Korea, but D-War sucked.

Yeah, I've said it before on other k news stories that Korea tries to have it both ways. Wanting to push and promote hallyu, but limiting outsiders. If they really want to expand, and last... They have to open up a little more. It could bite them in the butt later

“Korean industries are passionate about selling their content, but tend to refuse foreign content,”

This is a really valid point, and it makes sense. Korea has improved with taking in foreign content, but they're still a little behind on the times with it.

On the other hand, the backlash is really absurd and distasteful. Not needed at all.

I can't see them doing this and being sincere, tbh. From what I've seen (and my view is limited to mostly what's posted in this community), S. Korea doesn't really like or care about anyone but S. Koreans.

Because your colonization has not contributed to anti-Japanese sentiment at all. That may be why Korea doesn't want to import your music, you know, open wounds about being forced to learn Japanese and all that.

China's case I can understand, but Japan and Korea need to work out their issues. An apology from Japan, for starters.

I think a lot of it is just the fear and discomfort of a different country's culture influencing your own.

As an American, whenever I travel, I deal with the social backlash of it. A lot of people have negative feelings towards Americans. Most of them use reasons like 'Americans are rude!' or 'but America does all these shitty things!' (as if acts done by others of my nationality gives them any right to treat me like shit). But actually when I get down to the nitty gritty a lot of it is subconscious animosity towards the influx of american culture into their country.

Unfortunately, that's just something that comes with the territory of having popular international media - people are just gonna hate you sometimes. Hopefully Korea can see this and become less butthurt about it.

To me, Korea's industry is still very young and when you take a step back and look, so is the country as a whole. They have to go through the trial and error that other countries have already gone through. Sentiments and attitudes are very hard to change, but they will change eventually. If the internet existed a long time ago we would all be shaking our heads at a lot of countries, and them at us too.

As long as the problems and issues are out and talked about, and people continue to fight and stay on course, change will occur. Whether it will be enough to stop haters from hatin' remains to be seen, but we live in a progressive world!

Why are people cramming all Korean artists (whether they be artists, idols, directors, etc.) into one broad category of "KOREAN" anyway? Are people putting all American artists from bands like Radiohead to pop artists like Lady Gaga into a box soley based on what country they're coming from?

I can understand criticisms such as unequal distribution of foreign content, but if an individual is rejecting an artist solely based on his/her race and not the vision they're offering than sorry, that's an awful way of thinking.

It's the same mindset that makes people make arbitrary dividers between jpop or kpop or some bs. All japanese artists are like ________, all korean artists are like _________. Stupid.

Korea (and other asian countries) had to take lots of influences from Japan during decades, and the Hallyu in Japan can also be seen as a political victory (the roles were reversed; now it's Korea the one influencing Japan), so that's why people is taking it more seriously. Some japanese politicians still use the "sangokujin" word as an insult, that should also say enough about the backlash.

About Korea's attitude towards other countries, yeah, they need to open up and exchange products with other places, otherwise they'll end up repeating what Japan did and overloading people with korean dramas, music, etc.
