T-ara’s Hyomin recently apologized to her senior, Big Bang’s Seungri, for speaking informally to him on public broadcast.

She recently wrote on her Twitter, “I was in the middle of watching a broadcast, and that day Seungri and I decided to have fun together by jokingly mocking each other and speaking comfortably, but it’s been bothering me cause it looked like I was talking carelessly.”

Hyomin was in fact talking about scenes from the recently broadcast SBS TV’s “King of Idols”, where the two were playing a water game. Hyomin made comments towards Seungri such as, “This guy’s kinda weird” and “He’s dumb.”

Although Hyomin is technically older than Seungri, he is considered her senior as he debuted earlier in the music industry with Big Bang. Hyomin expressed, “We both agreed to do it out of fun, but if it was uncomfortable to watch then I apologize. I hope people do not think badly of it.”

After the show, Big Bang fans mentioned that Seungri was a senior of Hyomin as a singer and criticized her. Fans said "She shouldn't have used banmal even if its a broadcast", "Saw a case of impoliteness, doesn't feel good," and so on.

first post here! i doubt seungri cares though, he's not exactly the most respectful magnae out there, if you know what I mean.... "Top, top, top" lol

from how i read her tweet, she apologized cause she was bothered by how she came out on tv, not cause of the fans.

but i side-eye those fans' comments.

it's annoying that she's older than he is and yet is still expected to behave a certain way towards him. who cares if he debuted earlier? plus, if the roles were reversed (i.e if it had been a man speaking informally to a woman), i doubt it would have been an issue at all.

um that's Korean culture for you. Koreans care, don't criticize the way an entire country thinks just cause you agree with it.
and speaking informally doesn't depend on the sex, her fans would have come after seungri if he had done that.

haha. i live in korea, so "um" i get that this is the way things work. doesn't mean i can't disagree with it in situations like this one, where they were both on a tv show and had agreed to be informal with each other. and judging by personal experience as a woman in korea, i DON'T think a reversal of sexes would have come out the same way, but i guess we'll agree to disagree until it happens.

nice to know, i'm korean myself. i didn't say you can't disagree just not criticize it and she says they had decided to speak comfortably but it wasn't shown on the show so one could easily misunderstand. there might have been less criticism if the roles were reversed but i'm pretty sure he would have still gotten some comments. oh sure

that's sweet of her to apologize, although I don't think an apology was really necessary, especially since both agreed to do it out of fun and I doubt he was offended by her comments. Well I hope not anyway.

i feel like she was more just explaining the situation, not so much apologizing. she felt uncomfortable herself about how it would appear, so she wanted to make sure that people wouldn't take it the wrong way, which i think is totally fine.

Slightly OT: I wonder if formal speech and honorifics will become a rare occurrence in Korea in the future when it has become more egalitarian and more individualistic society (say in hundred or more years).

lol i've seen other guy idols ~accidentally~ use banmal towards other artists who are their seniors, but they rarely or never get any flack for it.

Oh sexist Korea. Both UEE and Hyomin get hated on for using banmal with their senior but no1curr that he's also at fault for using banmal with his elders

but both of them agreed to do talk informally for fun, so I think it's a bit different.

i don't think Seungri mind this..
it's more like hyomin apologizing to the fans if they feel hyomin offended their oppa..

Lol selective hearing/vision/memory is selective. In case these fans didn't notice, Seungri's probably one of the biggest trolls in k-entertainment lmao.

lol poor Riri for having over protective fans. If his cray cray fans keep on bitching about even the smallest thing, he might have to limit his appearances in variety shows and interactions with other idols.
