I used to follow figure skating seriously, and I've pondered this for ages...
Considering the importance of looks in South Korea, I wonder, would she be as loved and respected if she weren't so gorgeous?
S. Koreans are so crazy about her that when one media outlet got an interview with Johnny Weir the only questions they asked him were related to her...
Yes, she would be as loved and respected if she weren't so pretty.
Are you Korean? (I'm asking sincerely) Have you heard of the golfer, Pak Se Ri? She's not really that pretty, but she was mad popular when she won huge golf tournaments. Back in her day, she was more popular than Kim Yuna is today.
Oh, also take a look at Park Ji Sung. He's not that good looking either, but he's also crazy popular. I think it's a split decision on who is more popular between Park Ji Sung and Kim Yuna.
Sure, tweebs (tween dweebs) are incredibly superficial when it comes to idol stars, but Kim Yuna is not an idol star. She's an athlete and as is the case in most of the world, athletes rise to fame through their merits and not their looks (well, most of the time). Kim Yuna is the number one female figure skater in the world right now. She's earned her fame in Korea with her merits and not her looks. Although, it doesn't hurt she's pretty, too. But, she would be just as famous even if she had the face of Pak Se Ri or Park Ji Sung.
