yall are completely misinterpreting lyrics he wasn't trying to be offensive he was trying to say that he's proud to be asian and tryna represent. Alot of ppl make fun of "asian slanted eye" stereotypes but he was saying yeah i'm chinky eyed and what? some ppl take stuff way to seriously, i mean yall need to look at other rappers and see what they say, or go look at some rap battles, they say some really offensive shit, but thats just rap, we say whats on our minds and express it through lyrics and try to be clever and lyrical with. I mean i don't know jreyez personally but i can tell he works hard, he produced the beat made a video and put the song out for free for yall and yall just bringing negative energy. unless u really took a good look at his lyrics i mean what good does it do to talk smack bout a dude thats on his grind trying to do something with his life? if u dont like him why dont yall rap battle lol

So why not call it 'krn eyed' or 'jap eyed'. Although the akp article should've been on a personal blog and not akp...I see the point from both sides.

i dun think he was justifying. he was jus relating to mainstream rap genre in the us, which mostly have controversial, biting lyrics. he's saying its normal, and prolly much tamer than the other rap songs out there.

i doubt it. Jay has used some interesting words recently in his raps. for instance, he uses "bitch" and "clitoris" in the Catch Me If You Can remix he rapped in...actually i thought his rap was pretty hot, but the two words totally caught me off guard at first....especiallythe second one...

i really want to proofread his tweets for him...but i shouldn't judge him cuz if he grew up around "yall" then he can use it...i've never heard anyone use the word "dope" as much as Jay lol

i giggled when i saw this on twitter. do people from the northwest say "y'all"? I always noticed that he uses that word a lot. Thought it was just a southern thing

It's the same thing with the n-word. I don't like the usage of the word but if you want to call yourselves that, go right ahead. You don't have to listen to J.Reyez's music. I think Wang Lee Hom does the same thing.

lol a lot of people from the northwest don't say "y'all" or yall, it's just part of jay's spelling style. frankly it's so irksome because it takes me longer to translate his messages.

may i add that this came moments after some alk author wrote that they are offended they used the line
“My name is J-Reyez, yup, the Korean guy // I represent the Asians, we all chinky-eyed.”

jst for reference

allkpop’s been getting tips about the new music video release from Korean-Canadian hip hop artist J. Reyez, titled “Maybe One Day.”

Guest-featuring Jay Park, everyone’s been raving about how delicious the new track is, how (like his video) it’s hot like fire.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree. In a very big way.

I listened to the first couple of bars, was intrigued by the build-up, and then promptly rage-quit the track 35 seconds in. The reason being was that I was so offended by a particular line that I could not fathom how the track could get any better.

J. Reyez boasts, “My name is J-Reyez, yup, the Korean guy // I represent the Asians, we all chinky-eyed.”

Seriously?

We all hate it when people of other cultures refer to us as ‘chinky-eyed’, or when they assume that we’re all Chinese and so greet us with “Ni hao“, or some ridiculous singsong nonsense.

So why would we ever introduce those words, that slur, into our music? Why would we give others the impression that it’s okay to refer to people of Asian descent as ‘chinky-eyed’ because an Asian hip hop artist made it seem like it was acceptable?

It’s straight-up ignorance. And honestly, even if the rest of the track was spectacular in its verbal eloquence, those lines were intellectually cheap, degrading, and full of self-loathing.

I don’t care to be represented by anyone who sees degradation as a source of personal hype. I know that we’re in an era now that seeks to reclaim certain words, but some words, some descriptions, should just stay buried.

I’m not hating on J. Reyez, I’m just disappointed with his decision to include those lyrics into his work. With that said, I know every artist has the one bad track, and I’m sincerely hoping that whatever J. Reyez releases in the future will be something that will truly allow his talents to shine.

Maybe one day, but not today.

That's wonderfully written, considering it came from the akp comments, but that's exactly what Jay was getting at. The line "wasn't" supposed to be offensive because he was saying what was on his mind. And that if we don't like it "why don't u rap battle yall lol"

Frankly I don't like the word at all, and even artists like Wang Leehom, who tried to "remove" the negative connotations of it by using it in a positive way (he said his style is "chinked-out"), it still sounds bad to me.
