Actor Kim Sung-min yesterday was sentenced to four years in prison and fined 904,500 won ($900) on charges of smoking marijuana.

“Since Kim is a popular actor, his crimes were dealt with more severely. But he is very repentant,” said the Central District Prosecutors’ Office in a statement.

Kim will not require treatment for drug abuse, the statement said.

After the sentencing, Kim, wearing a blue prisoner’s uniform, spoke to the press at the front of the courthouse.

“I couldn’t fight the temptation from those who offered me the drugs,” Kim said.

The actor, who was once popular on the “What Makes a Man” segment of KBS’s “Happy Sunday,” said his drug use was accompanied by a case of severe depression following a series of failed investments, his breakup with his girlfriend and having been the victim of a con.

He also said that although he did smuggle methamphetamine into the country, he did not offer the drugs to others.

“It will be a long winter and I will live through it by trying to meet the expectations of those who care deeply for me,” Kim said.

Something tells me his prison time also has to do with smuggling meth into the country, not just the marijuana.

Since Kim is a popular actor, his crimes were dealt with more severely.

And in the meantime repeated sex offenders, child rapists and even fucking murderers get released after a few years... why, because they're not celebrities?

From: [identity profile] saintalecto.livejournal.com
Actually, celebs tend to get off pretty lightly on those accusations as well. Drugs >>>> Rape, didn't you know?

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume the sentencing had more to do with smuggling drugs into the country than the fact he smoked some weed.

do weed smokers turn to meth when they are depressed? His story seems kind of ....

I'm guessing he got this more from meth smuggling than smoking pot. But in any case your sentence severity shouldn't depend on whetever you are celebrity or not.

I'm glad this is being publicized. I think it is too harsh and sometimes for change to happen, cases like this need to have press.

As for the smuggling, I don't know. It sounds like it was for personal use. He should be punished, but rehab, community service, even just a little jailtime before rehab. NOT 4 YEARS. Jail for addicts is basically a rest before relapsing.

If this were just for the pot it would be ridiculous, but I'm kind of glad they're giving him a harsher sentence for meth smuggling/use. That shit is horrific. My cousin was addicted to it and it was awful for her and my whole family. She's clean now and living a good, sober life, but I feel like if someone had really punished her for it early and gotten her the help she needed rather than trying to ignore/avoid the issue then her drug problem wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. Not only that, but my whole family tried to help her repeatedly, but it got to the point where trying to help her was pointless because she wasn't ready to help herself. I hope that Kim Sungmin gets the help he needs and can come out of this clean.

wow 4 years. I think it was a bigger sentence because he smuggled the drugs in XD dude Koreans need to not turn to drugs when they are depressed and go to a damn therapist.

Psychology in Asia isn't as... mainstream as it is in places like America. I guess it could be said that the way American's feel about regular doctors ("What... I don't need to go there!") is the way Psychological doctors/therapist/etc are seen in Asia.

/At least from what I have learned. :)
