BoA’s eldest brother is taking baby steps with his music.
As BoA is diving head first into the American music scene, Kwon Soon-hwon, is finally making his way into the general music stream of Korea. The 28 year old sibling’s style is different from his little sister’s mainstream pop hits. Trained as a classical pianist who composes his own music, big brother holds a degree in musical studies from the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London, and cites world renowned Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto as his role model.
Last year, he set up his own digital music label, “Neo Musica,” through which he produces his own music. Although he strictly distributes his music through the internet, his music garners high rankings in the classical music categories on the popular music streaming websites.

Brothers Kwon Soon-uk (27) & Kwon Soon-hwon (28) at Soon-hwon's wedding
Having just gotten married in early May, Soon-hwon is having an eventful summer as he is just about to make his first concert effort, “Kwon Soon-hwon’s Easy Classic” soon. He will present his own arrangements and feature a dance troupe that will perform to Igor Stravinsky’s 1947 ballet composition “Petrushka.” I imagine that the concert will be an absolute bore and painfully long for those who aren’t interested in classical music, but if you are, it’ll probably be a treat to watch.
Here is a sample of his piano compositions, “Laprimo,” which creates a nostalgic melancholy mood, but not dynamically impressive. The MV, directed by middle child, Kwon Soon-uk, who has produced MVs for a variety of artists, is quite minimalist with a lot of soft lighting and camera effects that don’t distract from the piece. All of the Kwon offspring are in the music business, but doing very different things.
Check out something out of the main-stream:
