Kim Hyun Joong delivers coal in the cold with 200 fans

Kim HyunJoong started off the year charitably by helping those in need in his spare time.

On January 6th, Kim HyunJoong and his 200 fans, who volunteered themselves, spent the afternoon delivering the ten thousand coal pieces Kim HyunJoong donated to the families in the DongJak area in Seoul who are suffering in the harsh coldness.

His management company revealed, “Kim HyunJoong and his fans ignored the severe cold weather and went to deliver coal in minus 10 degrees Celsius. The crew had kept their smiles on the whole time, bringing warmth [the coal] and happiness to each family in need.”

In general we don't. Most homes use ondol floor heating (hot water that runs through pipes in the floor). I think that houses here that are heated by coal are old-fashioned houses, or that the people are poor (or both). Don't quote me on that (and please correct me if I'm wrong!), but I don't know anyone that heats their house with coal here.

Yeah, my parents' house back in Canada had an oil furnace until they recently replaced it with a geothermal furnace, which is pretty badass. I had never heard of ondol heating before I moved here either, but from what I've experienced it's quite effective. My apartment is pretty small but it's always nice and warm in the winter. ^^ Plus it's so nice to wake up and get out of bed and for the floor not to be freezing cold! And you can use it to dry clothes more quickly! haha...sometimes I just lay my towels on the floor while I shower and then when I get out of the shower they're all warm and toasty like they were just in the dryer. My apartment seems to be pretty well insulated too...I always turn the heat off before I go to bed and it's still always warm in the morning. I turn it on for a bit while I'm getting ready for work, and then off again when I leave, and my apartment is rarely cold when I get home. It's also really cheap, which is nice.

In terms of temperature here, the coldest I think I've experienced is around -15 or -16. It's not that bad, and those kind of temperatures usually only last a week or two. Like right now it's currently -14, but it's supposed to be above freezing tomorrow. December and January are the coldest months, and it'll start warming up again by the beginning of February. Having lived in Canada until I was 23, I'm used to -30C weather as well, so in comparison the Korean winters don't seem too bad to me lol.

lol yeah..."severe cold" is definitely an overstatement. It's cold, but as a Canadian living in Seoul I kind of crack up at everyone freaking out over the "freezing" temperatures. Try suffering through a -45 C winter in Thunder Bay and then come and complain to me about the cold weather! Though, if I was poor and lived in a house with no heat and little insulation, -10 would seem pretty effing cold.

But yes, -10 in a cut out of a house would really suck.
