See? Even the Lolas are into K-Pop! [Philippine TV]

(More and more people...) are getting hooked on Korean music, culture, and even fashion, otherwise known as Korean or K-Pop.  And in their recent gathering*, hundreds of fans tried to outshine one another, including two lolas (grandmothers)! Lala Roque was at the scene.

As soon as dawn breaks, Analyn wakes up.  She is busy preparing for a gathering.  Her hair is almost bathed with hair gel.  She says it is her group's style.  That is because on this day, they would meet up with hundreds of K-Pop fans in the Philippines, which is why Analyn would not let herself be behindhand.

K-Pop or Korean Pop, it is a subculture of South Korea popularized by artists like Rain of Full House and Sandara Park of 2NE1**.  Its music is a fusion of electronica, dance, and R & B.

Annalyn is a die-hard fan of K-Pop, not only with its music, but also with its fashion sense.  You see, whenever there is a get-together, fans try to outshine one another with costumes.  It seems that there is a Korean invasion in this venue.  Everybody is dressed to kill, but it is not just the kids who do it. 

Fifty-two-year old Lola Maria also steals the show.  Would you believe that she is also a hardcore K-Pop fan?

MARIA ROSARIO RAGASA, 52-year old K-Pop fan:  We watch K-Dramas on GMA... It's cool, because they could not believe that an old person like myself would get into K-Pop.

But Lola Maria gets her fondness for K-Pop from her own mother, 73-year old Lola Pat! It serves as their way of bonding with one another.  Lola Pat even claims that K-Pop became a way for her to recover from depression.

PAT RAGASA, 73-year old K-Pop fan:  When I saw him***, I tried to remember my husband, who was buried 11 years ago.  Every morning...I have all of his posters and pictures around my house and in my room.  Every morning, I would touch my lips and give him a kiss.

Each group has its own gimmick and display of dance skills.  That's what happens whenever K-Pop fans meet up. Some would give all they've got... some would even kneel down on the floor... there are chants being uttered... and even groups of friends wearing similar costumes.

Of course, Analyn, the star of our feature, does not let herself be behindhand when it comes to belting out tunes.

ANALYN PEREZ, K-Pop fan:  I would still join the convention until... I reach 25.

Through Analyn's, Lola Maria's, and Lola Pat's infatuation over K-Pop, they have shown to the whole world how fashion and music can become ambassadors of one's country.  Lala Roque was at the scene for 24 Oras.

They did get nominated, but not at the most crucial Best Director and Best Actress.

The judging process (which I personally find improper) not only involved the critic who did not vote for Jennylyn (the lead actress) for the mere reason of holding the cigarette the wrong way, but 10 or so others that included a housewife, a student, a teacher, and a bus driver. They merely voted on what they like to win without deliberating on one another. (Plus, the organizers will decide the Best Picture by text votes this year.)

my mom who's 60+.. the closest that i can get her into the fandom are the dramas. coz that's kind of our thing ever since i was young. we'd watch melrose place, marimar, rosalinda, endless love (winter sonata), desperate housewives together. but now where hooked into the big bang theory and i just introduced her to HIMYM. she was going to watch Boys Over Flowers with me before but she was busy at that time. lol. my comment is looooong. :D
