YG explains why idol groups break up

YG Entertainment’s CEO Yang Hyunsuk explained that the biggest reason why popular idol groups break up was that the members start wanting to do different music as they grow bigger and bigger.

He explained that this was why he has Big Bang and 2NE1 go off doing individual solos, so they could do whatever music they want but still under the group’s name. Doing solo activities also makes the members want to go back to the original groups, and they are happier once they reunite.

He explained that he wanted to keep Big Bang and 2NE1 running for as long as possible, which is why he keeps putting out solo activities from both groups.

However, this idea of putting out subunits isn’t new from YG Entertainent. SM Entertainment has had their idol groups break off in subunits as well. Super Junior perhaps has the most units, with Super Junior-KRY, Super Junior-T, Super Junior-H and Super Junior-M.

I think the difference between SM and YG in this case is the sub-units of YG are doing music that THEY want. I'm not exactly sure if Pajama Party was really the representative song of choice for any of SJ-Happy to wanna branch of into solo.

I mean GD&TOP MADE their sub-unit songs.

I agree with him. I've always thought Big Bang worked so well as a group because of that. Everyone gets a chance to make the music they want and their own chance to shine. That way there's no unhappiness about music and no greed for more attention which happens in groups way too often.

Of course not every group can pull off the solo stuff though.

Exactly. I'm prolly talking from behind my stan-colored glasses rn but Big Bang is really the only in-tact idol group where I can see each member successfully going solo. Other groups have members that either lack talent or stage presence or both and NEED the others, but not BB.

Splitting them up into subunits or letting them go solo matters only if they are given the freedom to do the music they want. In that aspect, YG is doing it right. Because as a group, BB inevitably has to compromise.

That's still Seungri, imo. He's getting more solo material because I feel like he is really ambitious and constantly pushes for it (whereas Dae exudes this more relaxed, it'll-happen-when-it-happens mentality) but in terms of how the company treats him...I mean, when your CEO says how surprised he is that you're actually talented...that's pretty harsh. :(

their artists are all too busy doing other things not related to music and consequently don't have the skills to produce their own songsgood songs anyways

yge practically provides an environment where their own artists take part in the production of music. sme artists are basically left out of everything besides the performance part.

There is a lot of truth in this. At least with Geng, he says some of the reasons he wanted out of SME was because they wouldn't listen to his ideas and they kept turning down his solo activities.

I think this is a fair explanation, and I agree that by giving them space from one another, it makes them happier when they reunite. So I give props to YG too for this strategy.
