Because most of the comments here are mostly about the girls english skills.....
JYP interview Spoons:
~I think this would have never happened 20 years ago or 10 years ago.
~Now cause of the internet I think the next generation really don't have the boarders that we used to have when we grew up.
~The biggest problem was the history. The history of no Asian musician succeeding in the states. That history is the biggest wall that I have to face.
Q: Why do you think there hasn't been an Asian popstar?
A: Two things. The timing wasn't right. The American people were not that open to other cultures. Because of the internet the younger generation really got open to the world. Now they are so much more accepting and open to other cultures.
~The other artists that tried to cross over to the U.S forgot who they are and tried to become different. They tried to become more Americanized. Their looks changed, their singing changed, their music changed. So when they really debut in the U.S they just look like another U.S artist.
Q: Why do you think Americans are apparently more readily acceptable of a Spanish speaking group, or even Asian sports stars with limited english skills who didn't have to go through the lengths the Asian stars had to go through to learn english?
A: With music you have to move peoples hearts. It's not just about your ear, it's not just about your eye. You have to move peoples heart and touch them. For them to listen to it, for them to feel the music, to enjoy it. Moving somebody's heart is not an easy thing at all. So I think that's why it's really more tough in the music field.
~In the wonder girls case their music is their own music that I made. That I wrote. That I composed. It's not from an american artist. It's not from an American musician. So we are really coming out with in the U.S with our own colors. So I think this is going to be a huge separation from other asian artists who are trying to cross over with music and concepts given by an Americana producer.
~ I think when Asians try to cross over to the American music scene they are more scared to be themselves. That's why they try to adjust their image and concept more towards America. We are going opposite. We are just being ourselves. & Seeing if this is new and fresh to the American people. We wanna give that edge.
~We are not Americanizing at all.
Q: Would you consider this a race between you YG & SM and Island records?
A: I think it can be a movement. I don't think we are competing against each other. We are only helping each other.
~Asian people enjoy music listening to the melodies. Listening to the lyrics. The more sensitive side. They use their ears more. American people use their body more. They feel the music. They relate to it. They fall into it.
Discuss plz.
I didn't know there was an Asian-American history Month down in the U.S

Date: 2009-05-22 11:33 pm (UTC)RETRO FUNKY GROUP THAT WE ARE TODAY!
OMFG!! Their english is WAHOOOOOO! They sound nothing like a gangsta wannabe valley girl! Do you Omoners think it's has something to do with learning English in NY??
I feel so proud of these girls (when I am not even a fan)!! I don't know why but I want to give a big hug to every wonderful that has supported them! You guys must be so happy and pround!!
I don't care if they succeed or not, they already succeeded for me. They have once again proved that you can always make up what you lack in talent by hard work and dedication ( and aproducer who believes in you -_-)!
As long as you are willing to better yourself, stand up and fight for what you want and strive to better yourself, you can do it. They are indeed WONDER GIRLS!
/end of mushy talk! Sorry This turned me into a cheeseball.
WG fans enjoy the moment!

Date: 2009-05-23 12:13 am (UTC)SO ACCURATE. JYP seems to know what he's talking about, here. I still don't see how the Wonder Girls will get anywhere (though their English continues to improve), but I'm willing to be surprised.

Date: 2009-05-23 12:14 am (UTC)I also find it awesome that he realizes the irony in crossing over to the United States: by "being true to themselves" in practicing American individualism, the Wonder Girls may prove to be more appealing than other the artists who have Americanized, and in doing so, still retain the Asian mentality of following the crowd. It seems really obvious to me now, but I never considered this point when BoA and Se7en were debuting in the US.
After all, we like Korean pop stars because they're different from the ones in our native countries, right? So why should it be different for anyone else?
