This is not exactly Korean entertainment or culture related news, but thought it would be anyway an interesting news item for everyone here.

Human Vaccine for Influenza A Developed
A group of South Korean scientists said Monday they have succeeded in developing a human vaccine against H1N1 Influenza A.

The scientists at Chungnam National University said they cultivated the "standard virus" supplied by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and created a non-toxic material that can be mass-produced cheaply.

The team, led by Prof. Seo Sang-heui of the college of veterinary medicine of the university based in Daejeon, said the vaccine was developed on Friday, 11 days after the CDC provided the virus sample.

The vaccine strain has been named CNUK-RG A/CA/4xPR/8 (H1N1), with the scientists at the school "confirming" its effectiveness through tests conducted on human and monkey cell samples. They said they expect to produce a fully developed and marketable vaccine in September, after basic clinical experiments are completed.

The vaccine strain has been named CNUK-RG A/CA/4xPR/8 (H1N1).

"The vaccine is probably the first developed in the world, with the university team ready to provide data to make the treatment material available to pharmaceutical companies and research laboratories around the world free of charge", Seo said. He said it may cost 60 million won ($47,000) to fully inoculate all of South Korea for the new flu virus.

He added that the World Health Organization (WHO) has been notified that the vaccine will be provided with no conditions attached.

Didn't they do the same thing with beagles? I just don't get the point. I'd be scared as hell having a pet like that in the house.

It's not just for the sake of them glowing. It's to find a cure for diseases.

The researchers told the AFP that their work could help unravel mysteries of some 250 genetic diseases suffered by both humans and cats. The findings also could be used to clone endangered tigers, leopards, and other animals, the report said.

Yep. It's not THAT serious... outside Mexico.

From: [identity profile] xcherryblossomx.livejournal.com
It isnt that serious in Mexico...less than 100 people died. There are more people that die from other diseases.

Really? So it's just more of people panicking and exaggerating things? Because in the news here they make it seem that things are waaay serious there.

Seriously. Everything is being exaggerated and sadly its hurting Mexico's economy. A lot of countries *COUGHSsarkozyCOUGHS* encouraged airlines to stop flying to mexico. A lot of people cancelled their reservations. China even locked up mexicans. Add to that that the whole country stopped working for a week.

i think we all panicked here because the first days they were reporting lots of deaths each day, and the information was confusing. but then they analyzed all those cases and found out that most of the deaths had been for other reasons.

I was in Canada when it first happened and my grandmother only watches CNN so for our WHOLE stay all I heard was about the virus and CNN's Obama report card.

Then I went back home and the news was STILL about the virus even though we're so far away from most of the countries that have the virus.

So I think the media has a lot to do with it.

Good thing they finally did that and reported less, thus calming people down.

the worst conspirancy theory:

The mexican president did set everything up so that he would look like the savior of the mexican people. Because there are elections in several states and that could help the president's political party.

Date: 2009-05-19 02:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] xshinebrighterx.livejournal.com
*The mexican president set it up so that we wouldn't make a fuzz because he legalized drugs.
*Obama created the virus so that he could sell medicines to Mexico because the US are short on money.

Date: 2009-05-19 02:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] xcherryblossomx.livejournal.com
You forgot
*Obama created the virus so that mexicans would die and the US wouldnt have to spend money on building a wall between mex and the us. And also the NAFTA would be cancelled.

XD
